5.0 out of 5 stars clarence carter: musical genius
this cd is truly a work of art (except for the first 7 songs). strokin' is possibly one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Strokin' is to music what da vinci's last supper is to art. this album is a must have for any serious music fan. in a word: sensational.

1.0 out of 5 stars DR. CC leaves me feeling sick
This is the second Clarence Carter album I own, having purchased it years ago so I could own his most successful hit, "Strokin'." Unfortunately, "Strokin'" is really the only decent song on this album. The entire album is 31 minutes long. That might be okay if this album sold for $5, but at it's full price, it is an incredibly poor deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, September 8, 2002

this album changed my life. strokin is one of those rare songs that come along once in a generation. it is a shame that it never quite broke through to the mainstream as it is easily one of the top 5 songs of the modern music era. buy this cd. in fact, buy 2 in case you scratch the first. you won't regret it

I heard "Dr. C.C" years ago and I finally ordered on CD. This man can belt out the tunes in a deep bass sound.

1.0 out of 5 stars DR. CC leaves me feeling sick, May 23, 2009
This review is from: Dr Cc (Audio CD)
This is the second Clarence Carter album I own, having purchased it years ago so I could own his most successful hit, "Strokin'." Unfortunately, "Strokin'" is really the only decent song on this album. The entire album is 31 minutes long. That might be okay if this album sold for $5, but at it's full price, it is an incredibly poor deal.

A sampling:

"Dr. C.C." - The title track is a very mediocre start to the album, and while I could possibly see it being a good song 30 years ago, it is entirely too dated now. It even sounds dated for it's 1986 release. A poor musical arrangement with weak lyrics and the lame chorus of "I'm Dr. C.C.; get your medicine from me." This alludes to the idea that Clarence holds a "doctorate in lovemaking," and is ready to give you your "medicine." You see "medicine" is a euphemism for his penis. Do you get it? If you lookup the lyrics to this song you can see it probably took about 8 minutes to write.

"If You Let Me Take You Home" - "I can take you home with me/and put you in my rocking chair/take off your shoes and let down your hair/and rock you all the way from there." Those are some pretty deep lyrics. I know many a woman who would love to be swept off their feet, taken to a guy's house, and then made love to in a wooden rocking chair. I'm pretty sure that was an episode of Red Shoe Diaries: The Movie. However, it's more likely that I'm interpreting the lyrics incorrectly, and "rocking chair" is another euphemism for Carter's penis. Or perhaps his lap? I don't know, neither make sense. More awful lyrics and melody.

"You Been Cheatin' on Me" - More simplistic lyrics: "Sure as one and one is two, and the sky is blue/you been cheatin' on me."

"Let's Funk" - Other than "Strokin', this song as the best melody and Clarence actually looks like he spent more than 10 minutes on the lyrics for this one. Unfortunately they are absolutely terrible. Could you expect any different with a chorus of "We've got to funk/it's getting out of hand/we've got to funk/I'm calling all men?" And don't forget "even mosquitoes know how to [funk]." This song contains another gem of a line from Clarence:

"Should we take a man to law/just because he screws his ma/maybe she just had to funk/and to get a younger duck/she brought in a streak of luck for herself."

I realize Carter is trying to create an image of himself as a "love doctor," but there's a way to add sexual suggestion to songs without being so ridiculously bawdy and crass. Raise your hand if you find anything sexy about incest or having a child to create a sexual partner.

I bought this CD 15 years ago, and listed to it again when I was converting all of my CDs to digital files. After hearing this one though, I actually deleted the files and threw the CD away. It should tell you something when you can't find a single web site that contains lyrics to any of these songs except "Strokin." Seriously, think of ANY artist that you've ever heard on the radio, pick any random song from them, and I would be very surprised if you couldn't find at least a few web sites that contained lyrics to all of their songs.

Despite the popularity of "Strokin'" at weddings, Clarence Carter's music on this album largely fails to stand the test of time. Unlike more popular R&B singers who are still enjoyable 30-40 years later, these songs are really dated. Poor lyrics and repeating bland melodies that sound like they were composed using canned tones on a synthesizer make for a failed attempt at a lasting musical influence. Clarence Carter has a great voice, but that doesn't help much when you are singing awful awful songs. I suggest any new listeners considering a foray into "Dr. C.C." stick with downloading singles of "Strokin'" and the live version of "Patches" and going on about their business.

This review is from: Dr Cc (Audio CD)
Dr C.C. has the right cure for all your ills. Each cut is perfect. I've been a blues fan for years but somehow Clarence Cater has escaped me but that is all changed. All the songs I would rate a 8-10. For the price its like topping on the. Bob
