Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

According to comedian Bob Hope, you've reached middle age when your age begins to show around your middle. Minnesota-based Dorsen suggests that middle age is a slippery slope where men are often caught between their aging parents on the one hand and the acting-out of their own adolescents on the other, "with the siren song of a midlife crisis on the horizon." However, his advice on the physical and psychological changes that the over-40 male experiences is often lost in flat humor meant to be "old chum" but often sounding patronizing. There is definitely a market for a health adviser addressing the aging male, but choosing one is a personal matter, and readers will do better with the style, delivery, and content of Harvey Simon's Staying Well (LJ 8/92).?James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. From the Inside Flap

Aging confuses us. Some of us find it scary. We can easily fall prey to superstitions, unreasonable fears, or outright misconceptions. One response to our fear is to take the ostrich approach and ignore or deny the nasty subject of aging as long as we can. But that approach may only leave us more scared and perplexed by the changes that will inevitably take place. Denying obvious symptoms or failing to inform yourself about what’s really happening to your body will only make you prone to all the misinformation and myth surrounding the male aging process. And it will rob you of the opportunity to take those steps that can blunt the sting of aging and add joy and happiness to the rest of your life. Dr. D’s Handbook for Men Over 40 is a comprehensive, reassuring guide that provides the information and advice you need to maximize physical health and mental and emotional well-being. Dr. D discusses:
  • The fear of growing older
  • Physical changes that affect physical ability
  • What to expect from your nerves
  • Slowing down
  • The psychology of aging
  • How aging can be good
  • Recent history and theory of exercising
  • Practical techniques
  • Nutrition
  • How to avoid going out of your mind
  • The hazards of being 40
  • Spirituality

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative assay of the maturing American male., January 26, 1999
By A Customer
The great thing about this book is that Peter Dorsen writes with a sense of humor. You can tell he's not a traditional, button-down, by-the-book doc. There's lots of advice and information, but it's also fun to read. This would be a terrific book for women, too, if they want to get to know their over-40 guy better. I'm surprised it hasn't become a best seller.
