Extremely accessible and well done,

This review is from: Dr Faustus (Paperback)
This is an excellent book to use to access the classic play about a man who makes a deal with the devil.
Wright and LaMar include a well-written biographical essay on Marlowe that contains all of his basic information, as well as explains the state of theater at the time the play was written and originally produced. But the real bonus of this edition is the footnotes, each of which appears on the page opposite the corresponding mark in the text. The notes are extremely simple, usually serving as a modern glossary for antiquated words and phrases, but occasionally going into more depth when necessary. There are also dozens and dozens of black and white reproductions of works of art that are related to the text. This helps to illustrate certain concepts in the text, and also to give a sense of flavor to the sometimes dry play. If you're going to read Faust, you could do a lot worse than this edition. |
