Their silly songs are just that....silly but they make me smile.

I have loved Dr. Hook since he first came out with Syliva's Mother back in 1972.

There has never been a band quite like Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.

I was only familiar with the later Dr. Hook output for the longest while and never considered myself a fan. I started watching this hilarious public access show here in New York called Ms. Divine's Tee Hee Heure. During the opening credits I kept hearing these insane tunes that caught my ear. Each time I waited to find out who the artist was, it turned out to be Dr. Hook. I soon started tracking down as much of their early stuff that I could find. I was thrilled to learn that 3 albums from the old days were being compiled together in one release. Outstanding, naughty fun that has aged suprisiingly well.

Finally the first three albums of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show are available on CD! I can fully recommend them to anyone interested in great music, perfect showmanship and witty, satirical lyrics. On these albums from Dr. Hook's pre-disco period most songs were written by songwriter extraordinaire Shel Silverstein. Dr. Hook were the perfect artists to perform his songs. The spectrum ranges from melancholic ballads (Mama I'll sing one song for you, The Last Morning), hilarious drug songs (Makin it natural, Get my rocks off) to pure parody (Sylvia's Mother, The Cover of Rolling Stone, Roland the Roadie and Gertrude the Groupie). Anyone who is not familiar with those songs should take the chance. The songs were rendered with feeling, emotion and a lot of fun. Dr. Hook still had some success later on with their lightweight disco songs, but if you are looking for authentic entertainment, go for this package. In my opinion, they never got any better! An absolute must for all fans and highly recommended for everyone who loves great music and entertainment.

I'm not sure how it is that this band fell into such relative obscurity, as there is a vibe here like no other. Radio stations rarely play anything beyond "Cover of the Rolling Stone", which is such a disservice to the band and the radio audience. There has never been a band quite like Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. This particular CD set is an incredible deal, packaging their first three albums into a two-CD set with some interesting writings in the insert about the band and some of the songs. If there were anything at all disappointing about it, it would be that the order of the songs on both the packaging and the CDs themselves is not the same order as what is actually played on the CDs. A minor flaw, to be sure. If you have ever had an interest in the early work of the good doctor, then this is THE purchase to make. You will not be disappointed.

I had these albums in my teens playing them on my parents big box stereo jamming to the music like there was no tomorrow. Listening to them now is like OMG, I can't believe my parents let me listen to this stuff, lol.
this is not the Disco Dr. Hook, this is the good stuff! you may want to hide this from your children unless you want them to know that you were cool once too;)

I bought this CD as it was only slightly higher than the one I was looking for, Sloppy Seconds by Dr. Hook. As others have mentioned, I am frankly shocked that this group is forgotten today. My ex-wife and I were fortunate enough to go with our best friend to see them at a small club in Dallas back in 1975, after the initial excitement over their Columbia days had ended, and before they started hitting it big with their Capitol albums. In fact, they played "Only Sixteen" that night [which would later be their biggest hit on Capitol] for us that night. They were an excellent band for a club, and had us partying hard that night! I had their second album, Sloppy Seconds, when it first came out in 1972, and loved it. The lyrics, all by the great songwriter Shel Silverstein, are brilliant. My personal favorites off of Sloppy Seconds are "Freakin' At The Freakers' Ball", "Carry Me, Carrie", and "Cover of The Rolling Stone". The entire album is wonderfully funny, full of the three pillars of rock: sex, drugs and rock 'n roll! But at the same times, there are heart-breaking gems like "Carry Me, Carrie" that will bring tears to your eyes.

I also liked their AM hit off of their first album, Dr. Hook's Medicine Show, "Sylvia's Mother", which I have always recognized as more than a novelty hit. Listen to it, people! They do a great version of the song, expressing the anguish of a man trying to get through to his girlfriend, while running out of money at the pay phone [this was long before there were cellphones] and being put off by her mother. The rest of the first album, unfortunately, isn't as great. Marie Lavaux is a great song, but much better by Bobby Bare, who had a country hit with it. The third album, Belly Up!

I have 2 of these 3 albums on vinyl and bought the CD to stay current. I also bought one to share with my 27 year old son. I love Dr. Hook and can't believe I waited so long to purchase this CD. I think it's a great buy for the money. Their ballads are so soulful and heartwrenching and remind me of certain times in my life that are great memories. Their silly songs are just that....silly but they make me smile.

I have loved Dr. Hook since he first came out with Syliva's Mother back in 1972. Have all of his albums and decided to finally order his CD's. I was just as I expected and it sure did make a 265 mile drive very enjoyable.
