I've tried 3 different types of 240 volt heaters, ultimately throwing one of them into the trash can, and relegating the 2nd one to heat our living room, if needed. In summary, only the 988 could satisfy my requirements. The other heaters simply did not move enough air to be effective, and because of the low air flow they also got very hot. One was so bad that I wouldn't use it at night, and the other is never used at high power unless we are physically in the room to keep an eye on it.

Let's face it - 240 volt heaters are high wattage heaters. When you turn one on, it is going to get hot. 19,000 BtuH is a LOT of heat to dissipate. 19,000 BtuH is nearly the equivalent of 4 "standard" space heaters! We live in an old house of wooden construction. Having a 5,600 watt box sitting on the floor scares me to death - that is an enormous amount of heat concentrated into a very small container.

Where the 988 excels is in the design and the CFM of the fan. It moves a tremendous amount of air, and does so very quietly. At nearly 360 CFM, it blows a LOT of warm air vs. a little amount of very hot air. The heater is a straight-through design, and moves air very efficiently. I would not recommend it for small spaces, due to its ability to move so much air. I also would not recommend it as a typical "space" heater for the same reason. This heater is designed to heat "long range" and it does so perfectly.

The 988 moves almost 360 CFM of air. If you place your hand in front of it, you will only feel warmth, and the unit never gets hot enough to cause a burn or create a safety hazard. Yet it can heat better than any other heater I've ever owned.

My application is somewhat unusual. The heater maintains a bird loft, measuring 12x28 feet.

I purchased this heater to warm up my garage. It is 240 volt so it will require special wiring. My garage is 22x22 and has 2 9' garage doors. This heater will do the job with little effort. I set the thermostat at 50% and it keeps the garage at 72 degrees. The fan is slightly loud but who cares in a garage. For it's purpose, I would rate it at a 5+ on a scale of 5. I purchased this in mid Janurary of 2012 and have had no problems.

|---UPDATE FEB 2014---|

The heater is still going strong. I end up using it 3-4 days per week during the colder months, anywhere from 4-8 hours per day. We recently had a real cold snap here with overnight lows at 15 below or colder. The coldest morning in my garage workshop began at 22 degrees. I found that in this extreme cold the heater couldn't warm up my un-insulated garage quite as well. This isn't a total surprise: I'm not an expert in thermodynamics, but it would make sense that a space heater laboring against extreme cold is going to struggle more than just warming up a cool space. Anyway, the 10 degree per hour temperature rise I experience on cold mornings (i.e. going from 40 degrees to 50 degrees in my shop on a morning where it is 20 degrees outside) was halved on bitterly cold mornings. It took the heater 4 hours to raise the temp from 22 to around 40 degrees. In other words, on extremely cold mornings I get more like a 5 degree temperature rise per hour. This is not a criticism of the heater! It was still 5 below outside and I was working in a 40 degree space, so I was quite happy.

I will update this review again should anything change.

|---ORIGINAL REVIEW---|

We have cool to cold weather about 5-6 months out of the year. I have a three-car tandem garage and the tandem spot is my workshop area. It is slightly larger than a 1-car spot and has high, 14' ceilings. It is open to the other 2 spots in the garage. The garage is uninsulated and gets down to about 30 degrees on the coldest nights.

I have tried various heating solutions for this space. Conventional home space heaters simply don't put out enough heat at 5,000 BTUs, and I only have one circuit running to the garage so I couldn't run a second space heater.

i got this for him to replace a kerosene heater that fell apart. he is very impressed with how quickly it heats the garage (we have a 4 car insulated garage with lift bay) and cabinet still remains cool to the touch. its not an immediate burning heat like you would get with a kerosene or propane kind of heater. you can stand in front of it and not be scorched. it moves a great deal of air and the circulation makes it very comfortable in the entire garage. the thermostat keeps a constant temp by kicking on and off as needed. he likes the nice compact size that can be moved around easily and placed where ever.
we live in the midwest and the coldest it has been so far this year is 25. it heated the space without any issues. my husband usually lets it run 15-20 minutes before he goes out to work. he usually keeps the garage about 65 to be comfortable while he works.
i am happy that he is happy and can work through the winter with no complaints.

UPDATE: my husband used this all through the winter and is still very happy with it. on the coldest days (at zero or below) he said it still kept the garage at a reasonable temperature. he had to wear a sweatshirt on those colder days, but that was the only adjustment. since it doesn't scorch you when you are in front of it, he placed it on the floor when he was on the floor working under cars. he says it kept him comfortable and kept an even temperature.
