Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a novelist, poet, short-story writer, and essayist. In 1883, while bedridden with tuberculosis, he wrote what would become one of the best known and most beloved collections of children's poetry in the English language, A Child's Garden of Verses. Block City is taken from that collection. Stevenson is also the author of such classics as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

My son's teacher recommended this version of the book and I am so pleased that we went with it. I particularly like the emphasis on the vocabulary words, with definition appearing on an opposite page in relation to where they actually appear in the text. No matter how many times parents or teachers emphasize looking up an unknown word, many students do not do it. In a way this format helps and forces the students to learn the vocabulary that may appear on the SAT's. I hope more stories are published in such a manner.

Note the Kindle version is not the same as the paper edition.
The paper editions highlights the more complex words and
gives definitions on the opposite page. The Kindle version
just BOLDs the complex words. You can still right-click any
word to get the normal Kindle dictionary definition of the bold word
(or even not bolded word), but this is not the definition
displayed in the print edition of the book.
The Kindle version does not contain the glossary of all
the bolded words as the print edition does.
Do not waste $1.99 on the Kindle edition of Kaplan's version
of Jekyll and Hyde. You can get the book free from
Google Books, although it won't have the complex words bolded.

The book itself is really great.
It really good that there is a list of SAT vocabulary side to the story.
It is really good for traveling size.
However, it feels like this was published just to make money.

I homeschool my children. This book was a time saver. I found the book much more enjoyable as well since I wasn't having to read it before my kids to find vocabulary words for them.

Pretty good book! The beginning started off very slow but once the secret was released it was a lot better.
