The recipes sound healthy enough for humans or dogs...that is, all except the egg shells.

This is the most comprehensive, informative, compassionately written and spiritually insightful book on dog health that I have ever read. Over the course of many years as a dog owner, I have read dozens of books on different aspects of canine health and well-being. I dub this book the 'holistic bible' for dog owners because it contains everything I have been looking for, all in one book:
it sets forth specific recipes that maximize nutritional value for dogs;
it provides logical, straightforward explanations and recommendations for holistic remedies and common health issues;
it provides accurate, easily accessible information regarding the sources for purchasing the appropriate vitamins, supplements and remedies; and,
it addresses the most painful of health challenges for dogs, along with fundamental advice as to how to either prevent or treat those concerns.

This is the first book regarding dog 'health' that I have found so lovely to read that I haven't wanted to put it down. Dr. Khalsa's overall style is erudite, elegant and delightful. Her writing is both eloquent and friendly, making this book a pure pleasure to read.

I wish I had this book in my hands before I began my years of nurturing my canine companions. I highly recommend it to every dog owner and potential dog owner, and believe it should be the core of any dog owner's library regarding dog health and well-being. No dog owner should be without this book.

"Natural Dog" by Khalsa is a great read, for anyone who is interested in providing their fur child's health & nutritional needs with foods, healthy supplements and using natural & holistic resources. Khalsa goes into sharing many holistic options to help enhance your dogs' health. Also, she includes many useful tips, holistic options and even homemade concoctions for many common ailments & special needs. The book is broken down into 3 parts: "Eating For Life", "The Nature Of Health" and "The Canine Cafe". Her insights are useful to the highly dedicated, as well as, the supplemental inclined feeder. So, whether you are able to put full time efforts into preparing your dog's food or only able to be active in this endevor 1-2 days a week, this book will be a useful tool to help get you started. Several great resources are also included in the back pages of the book.

The homemade recipes included are generally higher in grains and carbohydrates than I'd use in my huskies' complete diets, but I can still use many of the recipes as part of their diet plan. I have one husky (out of three) that seriously does need higher grains in his diet than the other two, (who actually need either none or very little grain). Individualized and uniquely balanced diets; including healthy grain choices, do not bother any of my huskies. So, for our needs, these will add some variety and will still be useful for an occasional recipe idea or portion added to a meal. Khalsa's reasoning for using more carbohydrates (grain, veggies, fruits) is well explained in the chapter on diet (yet not forced or preached). I appreciate how she goes into the pH balancing, breaking down different food sources and giving good detail on digestion...which does show that she has an educated opinion.

This book is extraordinary. I couldn't put it down once I started it. It's filled with new, exciting and workable information that I'd never seen before. The really neat thing about this book was that it was a pleasure to read. And the stories! The stories were so heartfelt and touching. There were tears in my eyes when I finished the last chapter which talked about when one has to let their beloved canine friend go. This book talks about holistic health and gives advice so that the reader truly 'gets it'. Every dog owner should read it and have it on hand. As the 'icing on the cake' it ends with a Canine Cafe' of incredible recipes. I tried a few of the treat recipes and my dogs are in heaven.

Overall, I liked this book as there is a lot of useful information on holistic remedies and I am pleased it advocates the importance of natural diets for dogs for the long term health of our pets. However, I am greatly concerned that the author recommends that dogs can be served bones that are cooked and that the big beef marrow bones are the best (Chapter 5). Based on my formal studies and vast research on natural dog diets over the years, virtually all holistic veterinary practitioners and nutritionists warn of the dangers of cooked bones of any kind, as they are more inclined to splinter. They also lose a great deal of their nutritional content and decrease their value as a great teeth cleaner for dogs. In addition, the big beef marrow bones served raw are also more likely to chip teeth, so I would also question the recommendation that they make an ideal gnawing bone. To be fair, the author does indicate the dangers of cooked poultry bones and those from chops or similar sources, and the importance of not giving dog's bones small enough to swallow, however, in my view, cooking of any type of bone to be served to dogs is high risk.

Dr. Khalsa's writing is clear and fluid, which makes reading this very informative book easy. She discusses how diet affects our dogs' allergies and other ailments. Most importantly, she gives good and relatively easy alternatives to conventional medicine to heal and keep our dogs healthy. She does not entirely dismiss conventional veterinary medicine but adds to it. I love the Canine Cafe with all the recipes. After I bought this book, I learned that a couple of my friends had taken their ailing older dogs to see her and they both thought it was a positive experience.
