A treat for fans of Jerry Goldsmith and vintage TV, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Dr. Kildare (Audio CD)
First off, this release is only for people willing to pay thirty-five bucks or so (plus shipping!) to hear music created for television fifty years ago. Such people, known as 'collectors' (and you know who you are), will likely find this release a must-have. Personally, I resisted for a couple of weeks after hearing about this CD set--then ordered it for myself and never looked back.
The three CDs in this set contain about three hours of music. While much of it is incidental music composed for individual episodes of "Dr. Kildare", the various treatments of Jerry Goldsmith's theme music used over the several years of this series is also included. All is presented in beautifully clear mono sound.
And there are a few surprises. At the height of "Kildare"'s popularity, star Richard Chamberlain released a record, included here, based somewhat loosely on the show's theme, titled "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight". Chamberlain turns out to have a pleasing voice, residing somewhere between the tenor and baritone range, and acquits himself well. The meatball surgery performed on Mr. Goldsmith's theme in order to fashion a pop song, however, could strike some as heresy.
The re-working of Goldsmith's main title/closing credits theme to create pop music is telling, both for the changes that were deemed necessary, and for the generally unimpressive finished product, alterations having been made by a different composer plus a lyricist. Equally telling are the early, proposed themes for the series (included) whose melodramatic, cascading pianos (a la Ferrante and Teicher) suggested few possibilities, while Jerry Goldsmith's theme conjured the world on a satin pillow.
My approach to listening to these discs is a pick-and-choose affair; I often program favorites and neglect much of the rest. But it is nice to have all of this music available, even if only for a casual listen once in awhile. There is a well-researched booklet included, covering many aspects of this music, its creators, and the show itself. This set, while perhaps a bit pricey, was created by people who love this stuff, and for people who love it. As always, every note of music composed by Jerry Goldsmith is worth hearing, and everything else here is at least interesting. This is a limited-edition release, so you may want to get it soon.

The "Dr. Kildare" - Original Television Soundtrack is music to my ears., January 17, 2012
This review is from: Dr. Kildare (Audio CD)
As the tracing of the history of US Television Programming is a little hobby of mine (with a particular interest in how the field of Medicine has been portrayed), you can imagine how delighted I was to stumble upon this title. Jerry Goldsmith's sensability in capturing the themes that were so central to the practice of Medicine during the 1960s as seen through the eyes of Intern/Resident James Kildare is definitely music to my ears. Hearing those opening chimes, immediately zeroed me in on fond childhood memories when, on occasion, I was allowed to watch an episode (or maybe two). Hearing this music makes me pine for the music featured in the other television hospital drama of its time too - "Ben Casey". If at all possible, I would love for Original Television Soundtracks of "Ben Casey", and "St. Elsewhere" to be made available sometime in the near future. But for now, I have some listening to do with this wonderful multi-disc set.
