MOTHERING - AND THE CHILD CARE ISSUE

Lately Dr. Laura has been making a smug comparison on the issue of child day care. She wonders how many women who put their children in daycare would be okay with a prostitute in the bedroom with their husbands. According to her, it's the same thing. You wouldn't want a prostitute substituting for you in the bedroom, so how can you allow someone else to substitute for you as a mother? She has made this comparison a number of times on her radio show, and each time I am torn between disgust and amusement. This smug comparison is meant to make mothers who have career interests feel guilty for every moment spent away from their children. I think that Dr. Laura would agree with me as to the intent of that statement.

Each time that I hear child care providers compared to prostitutes, I think to myself, Well, I wouldn't want another woman sleeping with my husband any more than I would want my child's babysitter to breastfeed her! I have allowed other people to change her diaper, give her a bottle and play with her. And I would be more than happy to allow any other woman to come to my home and do my husband's laundry or cook a meal! He is often entertained by other people, but he doesn't have sex with them. Babysitters don't snuggle up with my baby at night either.

In her book, Dr. Laura proclaims that, "Having children virtually from birth taken care of by strangers robs them of their early, and necessary, experience with loving, attentive parents, and steals their innocence." And yet in another section she states that, "According to Jewish tradition, anyone who teaches a child is considered to be like a parent and accorded the same respect." Hmmm. Now which is it?

I am a fan of Dr. Laura's and a friend got this book as a gag gift. Traci Christian has a lot of hate in her. Maybe some of the things Dr. Laura talks about hit a little to close to home. I wish my friend had not supported her by buying this book.

If there was any crime that TMC has committed it is impersonating an author. I feel like a sucker for buying a book to hear someone whine about Dr. Laura. This is coattail riding to the fullest. Buy it for your in-laws if you don't want them to come around anymore.

I bought this book thinking it would show a different perspective. What it showed was the most mindless self centered drivel I have ever read. I am sorry I spent money to support this "author"
