While the illustrations are really bright and attractive (some of the best I've seen), this is not truly a phonics series. Normally, when you teach a child to read phonetically, the first books start out with hard consonant sounds and short "a," followed by short "i," etc. However, the first book in this series is "I Spy"--"spy" is NOT a word used in beginning phonics--that would not come up until the "sp" sound is taught and using "y" as a long vowel sound. I was glad that I had only purchased the first in the series and not the entire series.

This is a nice set of paper back readers in a box. There are six in each box set. A nice new set of readers helps keep your child interested after learning the beginning phonic concepts. We started off with the "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and we're supplementing with these.

Set 1 starts out with I Spy: short a sound and m, f, s, r, h, t,c

Set 2 goes into consonant blends and digraphs etc.

Main advantage is having a set of books just for your little reader. My son loves to have his own set that he can read all by himself. For parents, the readers reinforce the skills we have been practicing

I have sets 1 and 2 and love them both. The first set uses all the short vowel sounds as well as some sight words. I agree with the reviewer who said starting with I Spy seems odd, however neither of my children who have used these had any problem with that book and they both liked it and thought it was funny. Children have to get used to reading words that don't follow the rules they know, and when there are just a few words like that that are repeated (as in I Spy and her other books) it's not too difficult and they learn.
Also I want to say that these books are each about 14 or 15 pages long - enough to learn from, but not too daunting. Some phonics books we have are 45-50 pages long and my current kindergartner gets worn out and bored.
