Product Description

Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Our boots and shoes have become icons, recognized worldwide for their uncompromising looks, durability and comfort. These styles embody all that is true and unique to Dr. Martens.

I live in a country where I would come out too expensive to return the boots..

The leather is cheap feeling, very waxy and too light for leather, nothing feels real on it., the inside liner is nylon, not leather.

About three years ago I bought a pair of doc wingtips but they were shoes...I loved them great quality, tough and comforatable. So I decided to get the fitzroy for winter...I was sadly disappointed. The leather is cheap feeling, very waxy and too light for leather, nothing feels real on it., the inside liner is nylon, not leather. The inside is ripping apart on me. the sole is starting to separate from the shoe, and they smell weird...not like any leather shoe I have owned before...I can't wait for them to fall apart so I can buy a different shoe or better quality...

My only real hope is that somehow I accidentaly bought the vegan leather shoe...but it does not look like it.

It could be worse, but nothing like my first pair.

I thought I'd found the perfect pair of boots to wear with a suit to work: just conservative enough to blend in at a glance, chunky enough to tackle the concrete hill that serves as a slip-n-slide throughout the winter, and edgy enough to be set apart from the legions of soulless cap toe Allen Edmond slip-ons that seem to adorn my pedigerous peers. I planned to keep these in top condition with cedar trees, weekly polishing, quinquennial re-soling, and rock them all the way to the board room.

However, though the item description clearly says 'leather' three times, and plastic none, printed on the insole it reads 'man made upper' and 'suitable for vegans'.

I have a high tolerance for those whose backgrounds, life experiences, and beliefs differ from my own. I try to be friendly to vegans, much in the same way I try to be friendly to toddlers who believe they are Spiderman and disaffected college students who believe they are socialists. I do not wish my boots to be vegan friendly however. I wish my boots to be made of animals. Soft, friendly, vegan, cute-as-a-button animals that have been raised, slaughtered, and skinned solely for my feet.

How is it that plastic bags and 6-pack rings can clog our nation's landfills for decades and plastic bottles and waste can bind together to form an impregnable floating fortress in the salt waters of the Pacific, but plastic shoes just seem to disintegrate at the merest suggestion of a toe?

Maybe these are the plastic boots that are going to revolutionize the plastic boot industry with their unreasonably good construction and chemical souls, but I doubt it.

I was completely dissatisfied with these boots. These were going to be my fourth pair of Docs over a number of years and I've never had a problem. I had to return them. They run extremely wide, the leather is half the thickness of normal Docs and lined with cheap canvass. The outer shell of leather looks like it may even be synthetic and there were black drips running down the boot that made the boot to appear to have been spray painted. Complete waste of time and money, however Amazon was great with the return.

Been wearing Docs for better than 25 years, loafers, brogues, boots, and 1 pair of sandals. One of my favorites was a pair of wing tip brogues I owned in Germany. I said, maybe 15 years ago, they need to make a wing tip boot. They did it, they did it right, and the results are incredible. This company has NEVER let me down. I will ALWAYS wear Docs proudly.

Work boot that looks like a dress shoe? If you like to work on style, this is one shoe that will do it for you.

The design of this boot is very cool but for some reason the right foot has all sorts of bumps and rolls in the inside. The left is smooth as silk but the right, not so much. I noticed this in another pair of Docs I bought. I guess it's one of the perils of buying through the net.

I purchased these boots because I have owned Doc's before and I know how comfortable they are. My purpose in buying these boots was that I had to dress in 'business casual' for my Mental Health clinical rotation in nursing school. These boots, with their Oxford-style embellishment, are more comfortable than any dress shoe I can find, and they look quite classy. Everyone that saw them commented on how it took them several minutes to realize these were boots and not dress shoes. I would not wear them with a 3-piece suit, mind you, but for everyday class you won't beat these. Special note: Most of you probably know this already but Doc's tend to run a bit large, so it may be necessary to purchase a sole insert (like a Dr. Scholl's or similar product) to take up a little space. I put some gel soles in these boots and they not only fit perfectly, but they are even more comfortable now. I certainly hope Dr. Marten's makes this style for some time to come because when I wear this pair out, I'll be looking to purchase another pair!

Overall its a great boot and I love the looks, quality and feel. If you arent wearing big wintery socks, the boot feels a bit loose in its width. Not really that big of a deal and it isnt a deal breaker in any way. Just a heads up.
