Shore reinvents the sandal with ultra-contemporary twists and modern materials. The Chunky Strap Sandal is a relatively conventional style yet here it is offered in an all-over, high shine Copper Spectra Patent, with the shimmeringly metallic finish even extending to the sole itself. Buckle fastening around the ankle. Spectra Patent leather. Goodyear-welted, the upper and sole are heat-sealed and sewn together. Dr Martens air-cushioned sole.
Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

The straps on the top can cut into your foot pretty viciously. I suggest applying moleskin strips on every single strap, and a heel protector on the back. Some shoe relaxer probably wouldn't hurt either.
But remember: they are Docs. Which means they will be murder on your feet at first, then will become your most comfortable shoes, and they are so well made, you will probably get to be buried in them. And these are so very gorgeous and stylish as well.
I'm hoping in 10 years time they will be broken in! as i'm sure thats how long its going to take.
The thick patient leather is amazing but more shaping at the heel rather than a straight cut i'm sure would have help comfort massively without compromising style.
I'm only sorry that Doc didn't offer the sandals in a few more easygoing colors beyond black -- and Charro, which is like a cordovan brown. They seem to have an overrun on turquoise and hot pink patent leather versions. Maybe they'll rethink colors next year... Tan leather would be nice... I do have wide ankles and had to take an awl to punch a neat hole in the ankle strap so the buckle wasn't so tight. An awl is a handy item to own for this reason alone.
Anyway, I love these and have happy feet!
ASTOUNDED when she loved them! I know they will wear well and hold up.....great shoes.
I returned mine because I was made aware they didn't quite compliment my body shape.

These sandals are NOT for the faint of heart. I expected these sandals to be big. I usually wear a UK size 7 in Doc Marten boots so I ordered the same size in the sandal. Read morePublished 5 days ago by shoeluvaluva

I loved these sandles but I have very skinny legs and they were too disproportionate for my slight frame.Published 5 months ago by pat whalen
No, the arch support isn't great but then I'm probably used to Birkenstocks. These are still REALLY comfortable. Read morePublished 5 months ago by BeulahLand
