Amazon.com Product Description

Dr. Martens combines comfort and style in the Melinda mary jane. With a smooth leather upper, roomy round toe, and tonal wingtip style detailing, this is the pair you'll reach for when the dress code demands informality. The insole is cushioned and fabric-lined, while the thick outsole provides superior comfort and traction. The wraparound buckle strap is adjustable to ensure a perfect fit.

From the Manufacturer

It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love them!, March 1, 2010

These shoes are great! I have really wide feet that do not like being bound up in shoes during the winter. I also had a disk break in my back a few years ago, so I can not wear shoes with no suport. These have been great in comfort, suport and just making my feet happy.

2.0 out of 5 stars No longer love 'em, February 3, 2011

I've come back to edit my review. In the Amanda, I was wearing a UK5, and they fit great. In fact I've been wearing UK5 in Docs all my adult life, so when the Melinda was too sloppy on my foot in that size I was surprised but bought the 4. After a few days of wearing the 4 (just a short while each day) I noticed a crippling pain in my right big toe. I did some analysis and found out that the problem (the diff between the Amanda and the Melinda) is that the Amanda's straps come back further up the instep - making the hole for my foot much smaller, and therefore a size UK5 works, because my foot is not able to slip out of the opening. With the Melinda, the strap is much further towards the front of the shoe, which means that in a UK5, there is a very large opening for the foot, and my foot was coming out of the shoe. The UK4 is just too small.

**

Last year I bought the two-strap Mary Jane from this collection (the Amanda, maybe? They all had -da names, like Randa, Chanda, Melinda, Amanda, Miranda, whatever) and I loved them a lot so when I saw the single-strap version I bought them. They are even cuter than the other one, because they have a little more wingtip detailing on them. I like the 'club' sole on these much better than the flatter, standard DM sole. Gives me a bit of height and allows for better defense when attacked by zombies :-)

After a few days of wear I do have one little issue, though. Enough to take off one of my original 5 stars. These shoes are leather, but they are lined with some kind of fabric. Ordinarily I count on my Docs to stretch a little (the UK4 is what I buy, because the UK5 swims on me). With a fabric lining, I don't think these are going to stretch much. They rub around the vamp opening, and I am flexing them all the time to introduce a little stretch there, but am not hopeful about that.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Cruel Shoe, February 28, 2011

I tried to wear these for one week. I tried to give them a chance however, I have regretfully found that these are The Cruel Shoes. I'm forced to wear a black, slip resistant shoe and these were reccomended highly. My back is in pain and my feet are a wreck from wearing them. I've been off work for 2 hours and my feet are still throbbing.
