I find this inexpensive meter extremely useful for assessing lighting conditions at venues where I am taking photographs and videos. That said this is not a photographic exposure or flash meter and unfortunately if you are purchasing it as an inexpensive substitute to use for that purpose you will be disappointed.

This meter gives you a simple to understand Lux reading corresponding to the brightness in the room. Our eyes are amazing self adjusting optical miracles... they compensate for conditions so much that we often have a difficult time judging just how light or dark conditions really are.

Modern cameras and video cameras have sophisticated reflective light meters built into them and if used in an auto or semi-auto mode they will adjust the images we take for overall brightness. They will also predict whether the exposure will be under or over-exposed in manual as compared to a photo that is an even 18% gray. Very few people use traditional exposure meters these days. The problem for most is that if they try to take pictures or video in dimly lit areas without a flash or other external light source the camera (or you) can try to compensate with very slow shudder speeds, very high iso settings, along with the widest aperture your lens has available. It is decision making time as to how you are going to get your best results. Because of improved camera sensor technology this is less important these days than it once was, but this is still a recipe for pictures and videos that have poor image quality.

I use the readings that I get from this light meter to help decide how to set up my equipment and/or adjust the lighting for the most satisfactory video of photo taking environment.

This product shipped quickly and surprised as to how fast I received it. everything is as described, works great easy to use, very helpful in my LED business for site surveys of existing lighting. Using a rechargeable 9v battery, good idea.

It does come with an "instruction manual" but it's a small piece of paper folded into a "booklet." But I really didn't need it, most of the controls are self-evident. The only thing that is needed is the weighting of the sensor so you can make corrections if needed based on the color/wavelength of the light you are comparing. My only complaint is that the weighting chart is literally 1 inch square. ie, tiny. It's "A" weighted to follow human sight, meaning yellow light is registered the strongest. If you are comparing apples to apples you should be fine. For the price, it can't be beat. There was a time when a meter like this was $400.

PS. I would not use this for photography. There are much better meters that are better suited to photography.

As usual I received this for free but I'll be candid about it anyway.

* Operationally this is a very simple but effective device. Peak and Hold functions are handy and easy to use. Controls are intuitive.

* Kickstand is handy and the rubber grip makes this a comfortable meter to use.

* Battery compartment design is a bit counter-intuitive. Comes loose in the box and you have to insert the provided battery and then screw the compartment down.

* Rubber handle is profoundly bad smelling. I'm hoping that it outgasses after a few days but right now I hate to handle it.

In summary, a wonderfully easy to use meter that's sensitive and apparently accurate.

I bought this item to measure the foot candle rating of light coming from an adjacent apartment complex to ensure they are staying within the local code. The meter did exactly what I needed it for. I also intend to use this meter for photography purposes, along with analyzing light distribution for increasing lighting efficiency while reducing wattage so I can lower my electric bills.

I searched around before selecting this model and so far I'm very happy with the meter. Its easy to use and seems to provide accurate results. It's too big to fit in your pocket so bear that in mind. All in all I think this model is good value for the money.

The light meter is definitely not new. There were scratches on the screen and wear marks on the sensor. The battery was also not in properly and it took me a little while to figure out that that was why it wasn't working. Outside of that it works great. It's definitely a great deal for what you're paying. If you want a brand new one you'll have to shell out a lot more money for it.
