5.0 out of 5 stars Ethiopium addict!
This is an amazing collection of beats put together by one of the most creative minds in the game. The sampling of Ethiopian music mixed with original and funky hip hop beats is very well done and while I agree with the one user that I wish the samples were a bit longer, the music is VERY well done in my honest opinion! This is a must have for anyone looking for creative...

2.0 out of 5 stars An impressive record collection does not an artist make
Oh No's Ethiopium seemed promising at first glance, but a single listen was all it took to prove otherwise. Songs like "The Funk" and "Excalibur" are nice enough, but have neither the substance of their own nor the surviving spirit from the original sample to create interesting music. Oh No suffers from a habit his brother Madlib has: sampling loops so short that the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, June 3, 2010
This review is from: Dr. No's Ethiopium (Audio CD)
That other guy who gave it two stars is a hater. This album is awesome, so is Oh No - Oxperiment. This one was used with all ethopian samplesl and oxperiment i believe was using only mediterrian samples. Good beats to chill to.

Oh No's Ethiopium seemed promising at first glance, but a single listen was all it took to prove otherwise. Songs like "The Funk" and "Excalibur" are nice enough, but have neither the substance of their own nor the surviving spirit from the original sample to create interesting music. Oh No suffers from a habit his brother Madlib has: sampling loops so short that the sound clips have no room to hide any meaningful melody. Come to think of it, Ethiopium sounds exactly like Madlib's Beat Konducta series, and carries its same flaws, annoying electronic voiceover included.

The tracks worth checking out are: "Adventure," "Soul of Ethiopa," and "Whoo Doo." Otherwise, unless you're specifically looking for African music-derived beats to rhyme over, Ethiopium will remain a flat, unstimulating collection of sounds layered over each other in unoriginal arrangements. Save yourself the time, and instead check out the classic records from the hip hop beat genre: DJ Shadow's Endtroducing..., RJD2's Dead Ringer, Pete Rock's PeteStrumentals.
