Book Description

10 and up
When it comes to questions about where babies come from, the way in which boys' and girls' bodies change as they're growing up, and what sex is all about, few people know all the right answers. In this book, Dr Ruth addresses childrens' concerns with warmth and frankness. Topics in "Dr Ruth Talks to Kids" include physical changes in adolescent bodies and the feelings that go along with them, responsible decision-making about sex, contraception myths and realities, and the processes of conception and childbirth, as well as important information about sexually transmitted diseases and sexual abuse.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The celebrated Dr. Ruth cordially welcomes her preteen and teenage audience, noting that "You and I are going to have a good talk." And indeed, she proceeds to hold a conversation rather than deliver a lecture, liberally sprinkling her information and advice with anecdotes about her own experiences as an adolescent and a parent. Though she avoids sounding dogmatic and presents all sides of controversial debates, Westheimer never shies away from offering her opinion. On the subject of sexual intercourse, she declares that "It's such a powerful experience that no teenagers I know are ready for it." And she succinctly sets forth her stance on abortion, maintaining it "should not be used as a method of birth control. However, I think that every woman should have the right to choose to have an abortion." Though the book's length does not allow her to delve into most subjects in great detail (except "how babies are made"), Westheimer manages to touch upon those topics teens are most likely to be curious about: the physical, social and emotional changes puberty brings; sex and contraception; sexually transmitted diseases; and sexual abuse. Illustrations not seen by PW . Ages 9-14.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up-- A chatty, direct, frank discussion of growing up. Beginning with "Your Body," Westheimer discusses the physical changes that take place during adolescence. She moves on to emotions, and touches on such topics as peer pressure and sharing the telephone with parents. Parents are presented as good guys, and the author gently encourages kids to keep the lines of communication with them open. Chapters on sex follow, and include paragraphs on masturbation, homosexuality, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual abuse, and the process of conception and birth. Dr. Ruth offers her opinions freely, and states emphatically her belief that no teenager is ready for sex, but does not withhold information from those who are going to have it anyway. She says she is pro-choice, but does not want abortion to be used as a method of birth control. The book's brevity will appeal to the many readers who want their information to the point. An up-to-date list of further reading is appended. A good complement to Lynda Madaras's What's Happening to My Body? (Newmarket, 1987) or Eric Johnson's Love and Sex and Growing Up (Bantam, 1990). --Denise L. Moll, Lone Pine Elementary School, West Bloomfield, MI

More About the Author

Born in Germany in 1928, I was sent to a children's home in Switzerland at the age of ten which became an orphanage for most of the German Jewish students who had been sent there to escape the Holocaust. At 17 I went to Israel where I fought for the country's independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. I then moved to Paris where I studied at the Sorbonne and taught kindergarten. I immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and obtained my Masters Degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research. In 1970, I received a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University Teacher's College.
My work at Planned Parenthood is what prompted me to further my education in human sexuality by studying at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center.
My TV show Sexually Speaking first aired in 1980 as a 15-minute taped show, which then increased in popularity and became a nationally syndicated radio show.
In recent years, I have made regular appearances on the PBS Television children's show Between the Lions as "Dr. Ruth Wordheimer" in a parody of my therapist role, in which I help anxious readers and spellers overcome their fear of long words.
Currently I am an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.U. and an Associate Fellow of Calhoun College at Yale University, where I teach a course on the American family. I am also a Fellow of Butler College at Princeton University, where I will teach a course on the Jewish family. In addition to having my own private practice I am a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and frequently lecture at universities across the country.

When my daughter was about 10 I realized that my technique of answering questions she asked but not going into more detail than she asked about no longer worked. She suddenly knew just enough to be embarrassed to ask about anything! She really hated it if I brought The Subject (sex) up, so thinking that she just didn't want to associate The Subject with her mother (I can certainly understand that!) I got her a book that she could read privately. She refused to even look at it. So I read it to her as a bedtime story. We shut the door and read it over three or four nights. It's a pitch-perfect book. I'm so glad my daughter wouldn't listen to me -- hearing it from Dr. Ruth, with her open-minded, loving yet clinical, detached, scientific yet human perspective was truly informative, interesting, and empowering. That was three years ago and my daughter is very calm and realistic as she, and her whole 7th grade class, surf through puberty. I'm buying it again because I raved about it so much that I lent it out and haven't seen it for two years and now the little sister needs a turn.
