Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- Scariano recounts ``Dr. Ruth's'' eventful, courageous life. She was a small girl during World War II when her Jewish family sent her from their home in Germany to live in Switzerland, and she never saw them again. Her lifelong interest in people and relationships led her to pursue studies in sociology and hu man sexuality, resulting in teaching posts, pri vate practice, and finally to international re nown by way of her radio and television programs. This account of her life is clear and direct, and presents a fairly well-balanced pic ture. However, given the remarkable events in the woman's life, it's unfortunate that the book isn't very compelling. Only a very few sources are quoted directly, and Dr. Ruth is not quoted at all. The book is heavily fictionalized with thoughts and feelings that are not substantiat ed. Other detractions include mediocre photo graphs and a list for further reading that in cludes titles not suitable for the intended audience of this book. Still, it could generate a lot of interest, especially if Westheimer and Kravetz's First Love (Warner, 1986) is a part of the collection. --Marilyn Makowski, Green wood High School, SC
