Book Description

January 1999 041591972X 978-0415919722 1
The world's best known sex therapist joins her brand of advice with the expertise of an obstetrician/gynecologist. Here they bring expectant couples a combination of medical information and advice on intimacy and sex throughout pregnancy and after. In this book Drs. Westheimer and Grunebaum offer suggestions on how to make conception fun and stress-free, and offer advice on maintaining a good emotional and sexual relationship throughout the pregnancy. They cover: issues such as pre-conception health tips for both parents; sexual positions for optimal comfort in each trimester; problem pregnancies; creating a birth plan; and choosing a hospital. This book aims to help new families adjust to the enormous changes a new baby can bring, and allow parents the chance to enjoy each other, as well as their children, for years to come.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Westheimer, probably the best-known sex therapist in the world, joins forces with Grunebaum, a respected obstetrician-gynecologist, to present a positive, factual, and modern approach to intimacy and childbirth. Their book is a compendium of sound information for couples as they plan for and experience conception, pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. The doctors explore the physical and emotional developments of each trimester and offer tips on preserving a healthy lifestyleAemotionally and sexually as well as physicallyAduring pregnancy. Dr. Ruth's unique personality is evident, especially in discussions of "good sex" and in the "Ask Dr. Ruth" columns interspersed throughout the narrative. Examples of other issues are designing a birth plan, choosing the right hospital, and dealing with problem pregnancies. Noteworthy because it is written with both parents in mind, this paperback is recommended for individual purchase and consumer health collections.ALinda M.G. Katz, MCP Hahnemann Univ., Philadelphia

From Booklist

Coming from Dr. Ruth, this pregnancy advisor contains more about sex than many others, but with obstetrician-gynecologist Grunebaum as coauthor, it provides plenty of medical information, too. Accompanied by insertions of cases "From Our Files" and periodic "Ask Dr. Ruth" question-and-answer features, the main text proceeds through the stages of pregnancy from preparation to delivery and life after the birth. Sexual and medical information and advice are dispensed throughout, and clear line drawings illustrate the physiological stages of pregnancy as well as many recommended positions for sexual intercourse throughout pregnancy. It is odd that the "Dr. Ruth and Dr. Amos Position," said to "improve the odds of conception," appears in the second trimester chapter, but the position is also said to be more comfortable for both partners, so it fits. The emphasis on sex is rationalized in terms of keeping the prospective parents' relationship strong and loving, and it never seems that that is just a rationalization. Fine of its kind. Ray Olson

More About the Author

Born in Germany in 1928, I was sent to a children's home in Switzerland at the age of ten which became an orphanage for most of the German Jewish students who had been sent there to escape the Holocaust. At 17 I went to Israel where I fought for the country's independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. I then moved to Paris where I studied at the Sorbonne and taught kindergarten. I immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and obtained my Masters Degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research. In 1970, I received a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University Teacher's College.
My work at Planned Parenthood is what prompted me to further my education in human sexuality by studying at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center.
My TV show Sexually Speaking first aired in 1980 as a 15-minute taped show, which then increased in popularity and became a nationally syndicated radio show.
In recent years, I have made regular appearances on the PBS Television children's show Between the Lions as "Dr. Ruth Wordheimer" in a parody of my therapist role, in which I help anxious readers and spellers overcome their fear of long words.
Currently I am an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.U. and an Associate Fellow of Calhoun College at Yale University, where I teach a course on the American family. I am also a Fellow of Butler College at Princeton University, where I will teach a course on the Jewish family. In addition to having my own private practice I am a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and frequently lecture at universities across the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throw away "What to Expect .....", August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Ruth's Pregnancy Guide for Couples (Paperback)
Everyone, I mean, everyone buys "What to expect when you are expecting" for pregnancy. But have you ever read it? Well, I have, and I have read Dr.Ruth's book, too. And Dr.Ruth has really "done it", so to speak. Clear, concise, to the point. With enough pictures to get the point across. Pregnancy can be fun again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very refreshing and unique information, August 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Ruth's Pregnancy Guide for Couples (Paperback)
There are so many pregnancy books out there, and what does Dr. Ruth know about pregnancy anyway? Well, I was really positively surprised. Many people don't realize it, but it's sex that gets you pregnant in the first place, so this book makes a lot of sense. And it doen't stop there. There is also plentiful updated medical information for everyone who has additional questions. A great addition to everyone's pregnancy book collection!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but certainly not the best, December 22, 1999

After having read "The Unofficial Guide To Having A Baby", this book just didn't compare. In only the first few chapters, there were references to "hanging from the chandelier"! I admit, the idea of that was funny, but not what I was looking for at that particular point in time. And things such as that caused me to lose interest in this book - and fast! The "Unofficial Guide" mentioned above is a much better, more informative book in my opinion. Dr. Ruth's was so/so, but as I said - NOT THE BEST.
