Book Description

August 14, 2001
This book describes the author's high and low episodes from the onset of his bipolar disorder to the present, a period of forty years. Distinct personality changes occur during mood turbulence--all visualized as various aspects of Mr. Hyde. Thus, Mr. Hyde-high and Mr. Hyde-low are distinct in their behavior and expressions. The goal of bipolars is to suppress highs and lows and live a mood stable life. As the book describes, this is difficult even for a doctor specialized in psychopharmacology. The consequences of repeated mood swings can be devastating, changing the course of the life of bipolars and people with recurrent depression. The text includes much practical material for bipolar and depressive disorders. The last third of the book is a guide for achieving and maintaining a mood stable life. Diagnosis, patient responsibility, medications, shock therapy, and useful strategies for those affected and their families are contained here.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Practices Not Preaches, March 3, 2002

MICHAEL P FOWLER (Fort Worth, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Samuel and Mr. Hyde (Paperback)
Sam Barklis is that rare human being who turned what can be a debilitating disorder into an avenue in which to help many, many other people. My wife is bi-polar and has been for forty-seven years, but until she met Dr. Sam, she suffered a continual series of hospitalizations, shock therapy and inept psychiatry
practiced by psychiatrists who only thought they knew about this disorder. Dr. Sam has her on the road to being "level" and I do wish all bi-polar people could benefit from his vast wisdom and the thrill of being level and not subject to the radical ups and downs of this disorder. The book was a most insightful journey into the life of a bi-polar personality, but because of his modesty, only failed to touch on the magnificience of the man who not only lives it but gives, not hope, but realization of a
"miracle" in my opinion and the concensus of opinions of every life he touches. Should be required reading for all physicians
and psychiatric medicine practioners.
