4.0 out of 5 stars daughter's favorite
my 3 year old daughter watches this over and over. it is a neat story and nice music and she loves the umbrella ride daisy gets to take with The Cat in the Hat. I am buying it now because we have checked out the free one at the video store so much I feel guilty.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing mistake.
While Daisy Head Maysie has many elements of a good Dr. Seuss book and a thoughtful story line with a good moral, it falls far short of the goals set by Dr. Seuss with his better known books. While Daisy Head Maysie has many elements of a good Dr. Seuss book and a thoughtful story line with a good moral, it falls far short of the goals set by Dr. Seuss with his better known books. When the draft of this book was discovered posthumously, it was animated and published. The reason that Dr. Seuss did not do so himself when he was alive is clear. It was still too rough and unpolished. It contains many loose ends, and rhymes that don't quite work. No doubt, Dr. Seuss would have spent more time on it before he had it published. It was shelved for a reason. Stick with his better known works. END

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Finest but Sure is Timeless, November 20, 2011
This review is from: Dr. Seuss - Daisy-Head Mayzie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was just a little kid when this video first came out and my Grandma bought it for me as a present. I remember watching it over and over and over again. Eventually it got put away and was pulled out again just a few days ago when I was organizing movies. My daughter, who is now just short of four years old herself, saw the cover and insisted we watch it. Being in my twenties now I was more skeptical now than I was then. But she absolutely adores it and she is well on her way to memorizing the whole thing as I did at her age.
Watching it with eyes untainted by childhood excitement I have to agree with the other reviews, this may not be the best work of Dr. Seuss but I must say it still has a special place in my heart. As close as it is to my heart I could not give it the full five stars, the reason being that there is just one thing about the story have always bothered me. Even as a little kid, I didn't understand how she could be accused of abandoning her friends in order to pursue fortune when she really didn't seem to have any friends at all in the beginning of the film. That point aside, I must say that even after all these years I know every single word to the story and watching it does make me smile (at least it did the first three times my daughter made me watch it with her). So overall, like I stated in the beginning of this review, Daisy-Head Mayzie may not be Dr. Seuss at his finest but it sure is timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful for the young child, painful perhaps for the analytical adult, November 5, 2011
This review is from: Dr. Seuss - Daisy-Head Mayzie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Children are amazed by the curious and uncontrollable and incomprehensible growth processes of their own body, and even more mystified by the thoughts, words and deeds of their adult caretakers. Dr. Seuss perceived this and used it brilliantly throughout his long and excellent series of children's books (check out his early adult stuff sometime too).

and so we have a young girl quietly in the classroom reading with the other children, when suddenly a growth emerges. The teacher acts as teachers will and the librarian turns to extensive reserach methodology from the days before googling, before Kindling(TM), way back when something more than computerized pad was required, like stacks and stacks of books. And we see them.

No seeing kids reading large books quietly at their individual desks, and then enormous stacks of books reaching to the sky may confuse certain children who have never seen such a thing, but that's ok . . .

Let them see this, and get them the HARD COVER version of this wonderful story as well, over at Daisy-Head Mayzie (Classic Seuss). Here we have the wonderful voices of Tim Curry of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (35th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] and Fran Smith of This Is Spinal Tap and the lovable Henry Gibson of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In: The Sock It To Me Collection - My Wife? No, That's My Brother

Still what is better than holding a real book out to share with small children struggling to see and come to understand their own dynamic and mysterious lives, and talking about it deeply. It is in conversation that we really learn, not watching screens, and the most long lasting learning comes through talking, and what better to talk over than a book like this one, with small children just starting to grow . . .

even daisies in their hair

1.0 out of 5 stars Pathetically quasi-Seuss-like attempt, December 16, 2010
This review is from: Dr. Seuss - Daisy-Head Mayzie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I agree with "a customer": this cartoon should never have been made. As an animation, it's OK, but this is no more worthy of Dr. Seuss' name than a 10-note ringtone deserves to be called "a newly-discovered Bach masterpiece".

Seriously. He may have written the outline for this book, but it falls far short of any legitimite production he allowed during his lifetime. Shame on his estate for plumbing his name for gold like this.
