Great for Car Rides,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr Seuss Presents: G.H. (Audio CD)
I cannot say enough good things about this CD! My kids loves Dr. Seuss books and when I saw this CD I just had to buy it. It is basically a reading of the Dr. Seuss books and is perfect for long car rides. We recently had to take a long car trip and I do not know what I would have done without these CD's. My kids did not ask once if we were there yet, they were to busy listening to these stories!

With all the junk out there, it's nice to know that there is good stuff for children to listen too. I don't have kids, but I have many neices and nephews, so, I'm always looking for good gifts to keep them away from the TV. this audio is fantastic. Anything Dr. Seuss is solid.

Dr. Seuss may lose something without the visuals -- he was one of the most inspired illustrators of his or any time -- but he won't lose too much with Marvin Miller reading him. It's an odd choice at first: the basso-profundo voice of "The Millionaire" (and thousands of cigarette commercials); but he brings precisely the kind of loopy fun these words need -- and he's really adept at the tongue-twists with or without the tape sped up. Of course the good Dr. always had a message, and Miller brings that out too. "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" is, whatever its form, nothing short of a masterpiece.
The one disappointment here is the Songbook. Imagine the real flights of fancy Chabrier or Poulenc would have had with "My Uncle Terwilliger Dances with Bears" or "Happy Birthday to Little Sally Spingel Spungel Sporn"; unfortunately the Dr. merely entrusted them to one Eugene Poddany, an associate of Chuck Jones on his abysmal MGM "Tom and Jerry"s (and the Seuss TV specials), and all he can summon is a moping blah, not helped by the bland studio singing. But this is only one small part of a throughly beguiling set. Okay sound, though it's obvious these were originally recorded for a budget label (RCA Camden).

Trip down memory lane with classic Dr. Seuss,
By A. Renbarger (Western New York, USA) - See all my reviews

This set of cds are the best of Dr Seuss, appropriate for kids and their parents, alike! Narrated skillfully by Marty Gold, this collection of Dr Seuss classics will entrance many youngsters for hours. Originally recorded onto records, then transferred to CD, the stories come to life with sound effects and dialogue that is a joy to listen to. Green Eggs and Ham, for example, brings in a string bass, giving a jazz background to the story. The Sneetches, Yertle the Turtle, If I Ran the Zoo and Horton Hatches the Egg are straight from the printed page--a child can easily follow along in the coresponding book. Bartholemew and the Oobleck in particular, is a treasure--the sound effects and different characters are a delight. The Sleep Book is especially good and wonderful as a last minute story before bed. I listened to this collection on records when I was a kid and was happy to find them on CD. I'll be able to pass these same stories down to my kids!
