Fun for Kids and Adults alike,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
Dr. Seuss takes his wild imagination and fun and turns it into one of the better alphabet books for kids. Every letter includes several appropriate items. They can range from the ordinary, left leg for "L", to the humorous. My family can still tell you exactly what begins with "Q", and we haven't reread this book in at least 15 years.Parents tired of the standard "A" is for apple, "B" if for ball book will find a breath of fresh air here, too. They'll be laughing at some of the sentences and enjoying the meter used throughout. This book bills itself as an "I Can Read" book. I hesitate slightly only because Dr. Seuss does throw a few of his trademark unusual characters into the mix. A parent will need to be close by to help their child sound out the harder words. Dr. Seuss was a master at making picture books fun for all ages. This is a classic example parents will enjoy reading time and time again, even if their kids ask for it every night.

X is very useful if your name is Nixie Knox...,
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
Dr. Seuss's ABC Beginner Book is perhaps the best way I know to introduce your child to the alphabet. There's a lot of fun for young children in this book; the illustrations are wonderful and the use of the letters in making new words for children is excellent. It truly reflects well on Dr. Seuss that he wrote such a fine book for young child just beginning to learn how to read.
This book introduces young children to the alphabet by first showing them the letters of the alphabet in both upper case and lower case forms; and then (usually on the next page) the child sees a thing or a creature with a name that starts with the letter being introduced. This book also asks questions to make children think. For example, the book at one point asks "What begins with (the letter) B?" The answers in the book use as many words beginning with that letter as possible; and I think that's very good. The book also encourages young children to go ahead and learn more with a sprinkling of pats on the back like "Hooray! Hooray!" This is a very good strategy. The hardcover of the book is strong enough to resist any accidental damage your young child may want to do to it; and the quality of the paper is excellent. Overall, Dr. Seuss's ABC is a fine book that remains one of the best ways for children to learn the alphabet even all these years later after it was first written and published. I highly recommend this book for children just beginning to learn the alphabet.

Dr. Seuss' ABC,
By Troy J. Westcott (Kiryu Shi, Gunma Ken Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
We are an international family, meaning that my wife is Japanese, I'm am American, and our daughter is both. We live in Japan, and hence the language our daughter hears the majority of the time is Japanese, which had me worried about her future English ability. This book as done much a lay those fears to rest. The pictures are fun, the sound or word patterns are nice to repeat, and easy to remember, which makes this a wonderful book for a 2 year old. On top of the fun aspect, she was able to recognize many of the letters after reading the book with me only a couple of times. This is a fun way to teach small children the alphabet and letter sounds, although the reader (me) did have to practice several of the pages before a smooth reading was possible, this entertained my daughter to no end!

Great book, great tape, but not together,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC (Beginner Book) (Paperback)
The book is wonderful, by itself. The tape is fun, especially the music, but the speed and page turns are fast. My kindergarten group had a hard time keeping up, but they really enjoyed the tape. I would recommend using them separately at the 5-6 year old stage.

This book is to be sung,
By
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
One of many alphabet books. But this one has the whimsical rhymes and drawings of Dr. Seuss. Just remember that the book is better when sung. Yes, that's right, sing the book. Just sing it to the tune of the ABC song (also the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep). The rhymes, the singing, the pictures, all come together to make this a wonderful book, one that really helped my daughter learn the alphabet. With this book and Sandra Boyntons ABC book (Aardvark admiring, Beavers ballooning, Cats cleaning, etc.), learning the alphabet will be fun fun fun.

Wonderful,

I had this book as a kid, and never forgot "X is very useful if your name is Nixie Knox. It also comes in handy for spelling ax and extra fox." I bought for my two-year-olds a couple of months ago, and they love it. It seems to be making an impression, too; last week I found that Arthur was able to recognize some of the letters in his name. And they're *constantly* quoting "Camel on the ceiling". :-)Do not bother with the board book edition, though; it's been butchered. They've expunged Nixie Knox, for one thing.

Disappointing abridged version,
By
This review is from: Dr.Seuss's ABC (Bright & Early Board Books) (Board book)
The publishers decided to make this board book tiny, only about 3x4". To fit the original into this small space, they compressed it a good bit. Nixie Knox is gone, as are many of the other fun Seuss-isms. Illustrations have been cut. Multiple pages from the original appear on a single tiny page together. In short, my child enjoys playing with the pages and I don't worry about them being torn, but I do so wish they'd published this in a normal size with all the original content. It's a great disappointment in this presentation.

Dr. Suess was a genius!,
By Nicky's Mom (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
My son is 27 months old with a severe speech delay and without any true words. I don't know what it is about this book but he loves it and is so verbal when we read it. It is his favorite out of many books. We read it twice almost every night. He screams with glee at the mere sight of it. He actually sounds out the letters as we turn to each new page. He points to the bubbles, doughnuts and neckties for counting even though he cannot count yet but likes when I do. He does "nice" on my hair when we get to the "mighty nice mice". He quacks like a duck for the Quaking Quacker-oo. He "roars" when he sees the Red Rhinoceros and Yellow Yak. Each page is excitement to him even though we have read it countless times. He also has the board book (which is slightly different) and I let him play with that one so as not to ruin this one. I highly recommend this book.

We're a 2nd-generation Dr. Suess family. . .,
By
This review is from: Dr. Seuss's ABC / Beginner Books (Hardcover)
. . .the other reviewers have described this one very well, so I'll just add my random thoughts about it. I read somewhere once that the best way to read this edition of Dr. Suess' ABC book was to sing it aloud to the tune of the "ABC Song" (the same melody as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"). That usually results in hysterics around our house--mainly because Mom can't sing very well and stumbles over "Sammy sipped six sodas and got sick sick sick." We got the "Board Book" edition when our daughter was 18 months old and read it to her nearly every night. When she got this edition as a present, she insisted on reciting the alphabet every time we reached a page that recapped the letters the book had already gone through. And she almost always comments on the ways this one differs from the "baby version." Reading Dr. Suess was something I did as a child, and this book was the best tool for helping my daughter learn her alphabet at an early age. You never outgrow Dr. Suess, in my humble opinion!

I taught my twins all their letters with this book. Now my son is struggling and I dug the book out. The pages are torn and missing so this will be my second copy!
