Book Description

August 20, 1996
In Dr. Sylvia Rimm's Smart Parenting,  Dr. Sylvia Rimm, contributing correspondent for NBC's Today show and the host of a popular public radio call-in show, presents her remedy for preventing children's early "shut down" to learning  by providing a comprehensive, down-to-earth guide for  all parents who want their children to be confident, successful, and independent in meeting the challenges of the classroom and life.

Based on her twenty years of clinical experience working with families and the thousands of questions from concerned parents she has answered, Dr. Rimm shows that encouraging achievement in the home is often a difficult task and even the most experienced parents need a game plan. As Rimm argues, "Smart parent planning begins before birth and extends to young adulthood.  Parents can't control their children's environment entirely, but they can set main directions that virtually assure achievement."

Just as Rimm's Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades has helped thousands of families overcome the problems of  underachieving children, Dr. Sylvia Rimm's Smart Parenting will help many parents foster a home environment that encourages the desire to learn.

Most importantly, Dr. Rimm outlines the four basic principles for raising achieving children.  Dr. Rimm shows parents how to: form a "united front" and avoid sending mixed messages; teach their children habits that encourage learning; set positive expectations by example and through direct praise; give children a sense of confidence without overempowering.

In addition, Rimm offers  advice on dozens of topics, including how to improve your child's self-esteem through direct and indirect praise, selection of child-care providers, dealing with attention-deficit disorder and other learning disabilities,  and test-taking tips for children with test anxiety.

In an era when variations of the traditional two-parent family, step-families, grandparent families, families with gay or lesbian parents, foster families, and single-parent families, have increasingly challenged parents to redefine their familial roles and parental strategies, Dr. Rimm offers a no-nonsense, compassionate plan for parents to raise happy children who love to learn.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Public radio host, regular on the Today show with her "Raising Kids in the '90s" series, and columnist for Family Life magazine, Rimm (psychiatry, Case Western Reserve Univ.) brings both public appeal and strong credentials to this sensible guide to raising children, addressing both common annoyances and deeper issues. Uniquely organized, the book consists of "cornerstones" rather than chapters, with groups of questions and answers concluding each section. Innovative techniques, called "parent pointers," are placed in the margins to facilitate skimming (though they can be distracting). Those seeking guidance on specific issues such as shyness, bedtime battles, and attention deficit disorders will find answers easily. Also included are less frequently discussed topics like immigrants as parents, grandparenting, and insights into how a couple's marital relationship may affect their children. The section on study habits is particularly strong. Though there may be some overlap with Rimm's earlier works (How To Parent So Children Will Learn, Apple, 1989, and Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades, Crown, 1995), this practical and wise book is a good selection for public libraries and, given Rimm's renown, is sure to be popular.

4.0 out of 5 stars I got realistic advice for real problems that WORKED, November 6, 1998

This review is from: Dr. Sylvia Rimm's Smart Parenting: How to Raise a Happy, Achieving Child (Hardcover)
Dr. Rimm's explicit advice hit on a number of points for our family's individuals. . . amazingly correct assumptions on reactions to common mistakes and how to deal with them. I first brought it home from the library but after renewing it 5 times, I realized I might as well just purchase it for reference! I'd like to thank her in person, for she's saved my second son from his mom's poor reactions to her first son's problems. Thank you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book- especially for inpatient readers like husbands!, October 31, 1999
It is usually difficult to get my husband to read any books, but i got him to read this one. I personally think the pointers are great, they are both pracitcal and enlightening, especially those reminding parents that they should set an example for their child. What is really excellent are the highlighted one-liners that summarise the advice in each section- the only bits I could get my husband to read !

5.0 out of 5 stars Uniquely Useful Book - A must-read, January 28, 2002
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book for its coherent, "big picture" presentation. It is different from most nuts & bolts "how to parent" books (i.e. child does this, so do that), rather it discusses how to develop lasting solutions for both parent and child. This is the ONLY parenting book (and I've read 'em all!) that discusses how the PARENTS' RELATIONSHIP AND INTERACTIONS affects the children's behaviour - not in the obvious ways you think. This was very eye-opening and would be useful for all parents, those who are parenting together and those who aren't.
