After sailing the seven seas in search of his lost wife as the notorious pirate, Captain Clegg, the Reverend Christopher Syn, Doctor of Divinity, returns home to Dymchurch in Kent.
His ship is wrecked, and Christopher Syn is almost the only survivor. And his successor as vicar of Dymchurch has been drowned in the same accident while attempting to rescue the passengers and crew.
So Doctor Syn resumes his real name and clerical garb, applies for and gets his old job back and settles down to a peaceful life caring for the souls of his parishioners.
And yet, after his years as a pirate, being a country vicar seems rather too quiet and peaceful. Until the opportunity to do something rather more exiting comes along ...
