Dr. Toy's SMART PLAY How to Raise a Child with a High PQ,
By Melissa Garcia (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Toy's Smart Play: How To Raise A Child With a High PQ (Play Quotient) (Paperback)
I would like to say that this is definitely one of the most informational books on children's play habits that I have ever heard of. Dr. Toy explains why it's important for kids to play, what they learn through play and makes very detailed suggestions for appropriate playthings for children from birth to pre-teens. Forget about asking some department store associate for suggestions! A must-have for any parent or grandparent.

Even though Smart Play is written by someone who calls herself Dr. Toy, the book is much more about smart parenting than it is about toys. Yes, the book has a great deal to tell us about toys. But it's really not for parents who are looking for things to keep their kids occupied, busy, out of what remains of their parental hair. Toys, in Dr. Toy's remarkably informed view, are tools for good parenting. The right toy is the one that helps the parent connect to their children, and vice versa. In many ways, this is a great book for grandparents, because it takes the perspective of a grandparent to realize how incredibly valuable it can be to take the time play with your children - for the growth of the parent as well as the child.

Excellent tool for ALL parents with small children,
This review is from: Smart Play Smart Toys: How to Raise a Child with a High PQ (Paperback)
I have used [...] for guides for buying gifts for children often. When I learned that Dr. Toy launched a book called, "Smart Play, Smart Toys", I purchased ten, one for myself and to give as gifts to friends with small kids. I love the book in how it is organized. It is easy to find the right age group and it is a fast read with the most pertinent stuff you need to know. I also like that it lists milestones by age and suggestion of toy lists by age category. I recommend this book for anyone with small children. It covers up to age 10+. It stimulates new ideas for exposing and educating and entertaining children and you can use it as a guide over the years.

As a Toy Industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience in sales, marketing, product Development and general management, I enjoyed reading Smart Play/Smart Toys very much. I particularly appreciate the vast array of knowledge, information, and love for toys that Dr. Toy shares with her readers. This book is a great guide for parents to use when considering purchasing toys for their children, and best of all it reminds us that we're all kids at heart that never really outgrow the joy of playing with toys. It's a great read for anyone that remembers how much they enjoyed playing with their own toys while they were growing up, or anyone that is about to buy toys for the children they love in their life. Thank you, Dr. Toy!!!

As a parent of two kids, I know how much we spend on toys and how we constantly struggle to get the right toy, appropriate for the age and the growth of our kids. After reading Smart Play /Smart Toys, I wish I had read this gem of a book a long time back! This is an excellent book for all parents. It is a fun and fast read and has information that a parent with any background, from any culture, would find useful. Honestly, I feel this book is more than about toys. It has a ton of information about how to raise a healthy child, both physically and emotionally. In my humble opinion, every family should have this book. As a matter of fact, after reading this book I have decided to gift this book along with 'What to expect when you're expecting' to all of my friends who are expecting their first bundle of joy. My advice to all the parents out there, including those who are expecting: Please get this book. You would be amazed by the science behind toy selection! The book will guide you step by step for every stage of your children's growth, and help make you a more playful parent.

As the grandmother of two-year-old twin girls, I found Dr. Toy's Smart Play an excellent guide to understanding how the right toys at the right time can help twins and higher multiples develop the skills they need at the moment, and throughout their lives -- sharing, cooperating, and building self-esteem. As a freelance writer, I'm happy to continue promoting Dr. Toy's advice in relevant articles I write for parenting magazines.

Much more than a toy guide!,
This review is from: Smart Play Smart Toys: How to Raise a Child with a High PQ (Paperback)
Smart Play Smart Toys is much more than a toy guide: It's a highly usable and perceptive handbook about children's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. It also embodies a parenting philosophy that respects and nurtures the hearts and minds of children. Smart Play Smart Toys offers practical ways to help children grow through engaging and relating with the people and things around them. This book is going on my shelf of "most frequently consulted references."
