3.0 out of 5 stars The illustrations are ok but this is a weak adaptation, January 23, 2010
This review is from: Dracula (Graphic Horror Set 2) (Library Binding)
I found this graphic novel for younger readers (recommended age is 9-12) at my local library. This is the second Graphic Planet adaptation of a classic novel that I've read, the other one being The Tell-Tale Heart (Graphic Horror Set 2). Though it is refreshing to see these adaptations of classic horror literature targeted at younger readers, the adaptation itself is rather weak. The story has been abbreviated to such an extent that all the atmosphere of the original classic is lost in translation - the writers have chosen to omit some crucial parts such as Lucy Westenra's final death after being turned into a vampire, etc. The story appears uneven and choppy, and the illustrations though well-done do not really enhance the story, but detract from it. It would be a shame for younger readers to read this adaptation and never realize the true beauty of the original - I myself read the full-length version of Dracula when I was about 12, and an affordable and sturdy edition to consider would be Dracula (Barnes & Noble Classics). As for this graphic novel version, it is average - and might appeal to children who don't wish to plod through the classic. The illustrations never quite manage to convey all of the horror and atmosphere that one's imagination conjures upon reading the classic.
