Never to Die, October 26, 2007
This review is from: Dracula (Audio CD)
With a stunning orchestra and stellar lyrics, Evans and Orton have composed a masterpiece. Closely following the book, their rendition returns to Count Dracula what society has so horrifically stolen from him. Michael McCarthy excells as the chilling and sensual lead role. Songs such as "I Am Condemned," "Within My World," and "Never to Die" allow listeners to see a full range of emotion and power. A beautiful, inspired recording, Dracula gives you chills every time you hear it.

ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC!, July 27, 2008
This review is from: Dracula (Audio CD)
I found this while searching for the Frank Wildhorn Dracula Musical. it had not been there the last time I searched Amazon and at about $9 to download I thought I would try it as I was looking for a new gothic musical. I am SO glad I did. this find is truly worth gold. the music is as wonderful and the lyrics as tight as one might expect from Frank Wildhorn himself. I was hooked from the very first song and really pulled into the story. this musical is MUCH more faithful to the book than any others I have encountered and adds a bit of History about the real Vlad Dracul. what has so long plagued me about the other renditions of this tales is having Mina be Dracula's long lost love reincarnated, or have them have some kind of romance. this musical does have romance but the RIGHT one between Harker and Mina and having Dracula be the monster that he is in the book. he doesn't love Mina; he lust after her with frightening passion.
the vocals are all beautiful and there is not a sour note in the whole thing. "Within my world", "Your Hearts Desire" and especially "Those dreams of long ago" stand out as three of the best songs on the album. even the songs you think will slow down the story ("I'm really not insane") or be of no consequence ("For the goof of Mankind") still deliver and turn out to be mush better than you would originally think.
this musical defiantly will Rival or (dare is say?) surpass the Frank Wildhorn version(Whenever it may come out) from the few songs I have heard from the FW Dracula.
Worth the Money. Worth the time. Get it now

Good Concept, Bad Music, February 17, 2011
This review is from: Dracula (Audio CD)
So, to be fair, this music isn't TERRIBLE, but it's definitely not very good either. The songs aren't very melodic and seem to just trudge on through the lyrics. The songs are pedestrian and predictable, and while the cast (who all sound very much alike) makes their way through them well enough, they just aren't memorable or interesting. You just know there's going to be some brooding lyric that tries really hard to be poetic and dramatic, and then there's going to be some kind of build at the end and a really long high note at the end. Meh. There seem to be a lot of instances of the words "passion," "evil within," "gaze" rhyming with "blaze" and other such expected lyrics. It's just not great songwriting, and I really don't see it making its way to success on the Great White Way. It sounds like one long song cut into several short tracks, rather than a cohesive series of coherent and unique songs. The songs that actually stand out sound a little like rip-offs of other composers (see below).
Having recently been introduced to both this version as well as the concept recordings of Wildhorn's version, it's hard not to make comparisons. Wildhorn's music might sound a little more contemporary, but the story moves along better and there's more variety and better pacing to the score. To take something like Dracula and turn it into a musical seems like an ambitious and daunting (and unnecessary?) undertaking, and I believe it can be done, but this is not it.
