Book Description

May 1, 2012
Dracula is the ultimate vampire story. It has it all, from a remote, eerie castle in Transylvania, to the strange nocturnal life of its inhabitant, Count Dracula. Plenty of blood, garlic, stakes to the heart and other details that have become staples of this horror genre. Dracula is written as a collection of realistic, but fictional, diary entries, telegrams, letters, ship's logs, and newspaper clippings, all of which add a degree of realism to the story. This publication of Dracula is part of the Qualitas Classics Fireside Series, where pure, ageless classics are presented in clean, easy to read reprints. 5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to give the heebie jeebies December 15, 2010
By Rabbit
Format:Paperback
You may not like the story, the characters, or something else... but you must agree that reading this book in the middle of the night certainly raises the pulse and makes you turn in fear at every little creak. I never expected to be scared by a classic book, especially with all the horror films produced in our day in age, but Dracula has an atmosphere which draws the reader into the story and the dark woods, the castle, and the ruins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychologically Beautiful November 14, 2010
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up about a year ago yearning for something to remind me of what vampires are supposed to be. What better way to do that than to read the book that started it all?

In this book, vampires are not glorified, they are not romantic, they don't go to prom and they don't fall in love. They are powerful human predators. Bram Stoker gave a wonderfully animalistic approach to the vampire lore which I feel hadn't been told as well since the myths of old and definitely hasn't been touched upon since.

What I love so much about this story is that the character of Count Dracula is developed under raw seduction. He's terrifying not because he has sharp teeth and can stalk you in the night, but because he is so powerful that his victims, in the end, want to be his prey. No creature can be scarier than one that controls your will. The story mostly circles around the other characters--leaving the count himself as an eerie shadow lurking in the back of the readers mind--and in them we can see the transformation from naďveté to fear to ignorance straight down to longing. The characters are all deeply important in their own ways; uniting despite their personal differences to overcome a great evil. This story is about influence and a primal fight for survival and free will.

This book isn't for lovers of action and generic horror; but from a psychological and developmental standpoint, it is fulfilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! Fantastic! October 22, 2010

Format:Paperback
Just reading Count Dracula's greeting, "Welcome to my house. Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring!" gave me chills as well as fantastically visual descriptions of the Count and the atmosphere. I was also glad that I had not had much exposure to the diluted, popularized versions of Vampire movies and contemporary Vampire trends, therefore was unaffected. This is a fantastically entertaining book, and not only about the Vampire but actually more about the characters and the culture, and the journal style of narratives by different characters works very well to really capture the experiences of horror, valor, faith, and intelligence of the characters. I actually think that Mina is the most interesting one that has multiple and sophisticated elements---somewhat of a martyr, ideal Victorian woman, and at the same time with a sharp analytical and investigave mind-- which is rather surprising considering the Victorian culture. The writing is so beautiful and clever that extreme violence, gore and sexuality that could have easily been over the top, are not disruptive of the story, or of the underlying concepts of eternal life through Christ's blood and the eternal youth and life through destruction. What a great treat!

After Frank Langella and Gary Oldman-which actor would make a good Dracula?
Anyone as long as they don't screw the story up by throwing in the lovey dovey sub plot Copola invented whole cloth. Count Dracula is a wolf on two legs and a rabid one at that. Dracula the prince was a violent man who showed no great love of any of the women he married or was other wise... Read more

Is this version of the book the original one?
This one is the original version. Broadview texts particularly aim for the scholarly editions of these novels.
Right from the book:
"This edition is based on the original 1987 text published by Constable. Obvious typographical errors in the original have been corrected."
