Product Description

Stop energy loss through your attic stairwell with Draft Cap, the patented thermal barrier that covers your attic stair opening to prevent air flow. According to the Department of Energy, the entryway to your attic is the one of the largest gaps in your home's insulation. In fact, that gap causes such a deficiency in the thermal barrier between your attic and living area that the National Building Energy Code has adopted guidelines for insulating the opening. Until now, no simple solution has existed for homeowners and contractors to comply. Draft Cap offers a do-it-yourself solution, with a durable polystyrene foam product that simply sits over the opening to your attic - reducing heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. This simple insulation solution has an R-value of 11 and can save you on average $19/month in heating and cooling costs. The Draft Cap is also ENERGY STAR certified, meets all local and federal building codes for attic access panel insulation, and meets UL-94HF-1 specifications for flammability. With the money you will save on your energy bills, the Draft Cap attic entry insulator will pay for itself very quickly! Assembly requires no tools and takes less than 5 minutes. To check if Draft Cap will fit your attic, simply pull the attic hatch down so that it is roughly at a 45 degree angle. Then step around the back side of the door and measure just the plywood door or panel (not the molding.) If this measurement is in the vicinity of 24" x 52", then you have a standard-size pull-down stair unit and Draft Cap will surely fit! Underside clearance is 7-7/8". Weight is approximately 8 lbs. Has a wall thickness of 2-3/4".

Beware of the Measurements August 29, 2011

This product is composed of two parts (as though cut in half) that simply abut together to form the image shown; the parts do not slide into one another and there is no overlap. The product is made of styrofoam (the material used to make soda coolers for use at the beach, but is of much higher quality and quite thick (3 inches or so)). Critically, there is absolutely no possibility of adjusting the size of the product. If your attic access entryway is too long, the product will leave a gap in the middle between the two halves, defeating the purpose of the insulation. If your access entryway is too wide, the product will not fit at all and cannot be made to fit. The foam is rigid and cannot be "stretched" at all without cracking or shattering. These properties make the length and width of your access entryway critical. The instructions say that the product will "surely" fit if the "opening" -- "the plywood door or panel (not the molding) is in the vicinity of 24" x 52" However this is not true; the access cannot be made to fit anything much wider than 24". I followed the seller's instructions and measured the "opening" of my attic entryway, however, my attic entryway is framed with 2x6s which add 2 inches to each side of the opening. So although my opening was 24" wide, the product did not fit at all. The seller was great in allowing me to return the product, however, the product is large and bulky and the cost of shipping it back to the seller by UPS was nearly equal to the purchase price! I would have given it just one star for the poor measurement instructions and for the seller's failure to disclose that it is not capable of being adjusted at all, however, I gave it a second star because the product is of high quality rigid foam and might be useful for those with an attic entryway that is exactly the right size (-- and also because of the seller's cooperation in accepting the return).

We have had the Draft Cap for over a year and it works very, very well. It stops cold air leaks into our house during the winter and keeps air conditioned air in the house during the summer. When I open the pull-down staircase in the winter, the air temperature under the Draft Cap is the same as the room temperature. However, when I push the Draft Cap open, I can feel a blast of cold air. I was initially skeptical that this thing would work, but it really does.

I have since compared the unit to other similar products (e.g. those made with more flexible materials with zippers and ones made from rigid foam insulation) and Draft Cap seems to be better because it has no leaky seams. It also looks much better. I have bought two more as gifts.

I really liked the ease of install as the weight of the cap holds it over the hole. Going up into the attic just requires you to slide it off the hole. The cap can cover a fairly large hole, but make sure you measure it before ordering. The styrofoam material and the air underneath the cap make for good insulation vs. the cloth attic covers. Assembly was easy to do as far as gluing the two pieces of stryofoam together and taping the seam. I did use additional thermal tape (not provided) to completely close the seam on both the inside and outside of the cap.
