Amazon.com Review

Many gay writers have had an affinity for the supernatural and fanciful--think of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan or Oscar Wilde's fairy tales--and why not? In societies that persecute homosexuals, what could be more comforting than alternative worlds that transcend the harshness of reality? In its 17 stories The Drag Queen of Elfland creates not so much other independent worlds, but shows us the hidden reality beneath our all too expected material lives. In "Take Back the Night," a lesbian bookstore owner meets one of the women who runs with the (were) wolves, and in "Hemo Homo," a gay vampire discovers the drawbacks of going to the gym (too many mirrors, is the least of it). Lawrence Schimel is always funny, politically on-target, and unafraid to push his subject to new, and often startling, places.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy with a splendidly modern sensibility, June 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Drag Queen of Elfland: Short Stories by Lawrence Schimel (Paperback)
Lawrence Schimel's short stories address the fantasy genre from a perspective firmly rooted in contemporary queer society with results that are both delightful and poignant. He manages to pack more emotional resonance into his stories (the longest of which are just over a dozen pages) than many writers manage to get into entire novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Combining Two Worlds!, May 12, 2003
This review is from: The Drag Queen of Elfland: Short Stories by Lawrence Schimel (Paperback)
Here's a collection of 17 short fantasy stories from an author who knows how to be funny as well as push a lot of buttons to get his points across. He's created a new and exciting kind of gay writing through alternative worlds of the supernatural where individuals, no matter your age, gender or sexual orientation can be free to be whoever they wish to be. "Take Back the Night" about a lesbian bookstore owner was fascinating reading that would make anyone hope they never run into a wolf. I was equally thrilled with the stories; "Fag Hag" and "Coming Out of the Broom Closet". What an imagination Schimel has. This is a collection of fantasy stories that should not be missed, written by a young author who seems to have a talent for tackling difficult subjects and making them light but fascinating reading for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars *smirk*, April 10, 2003

This review is from: The Drag Queen of Elfland: Short Stories by Lawrence Schimel (Paperback)
I laughed, I cried, I got vaguely grossed out about horse racing, and I loaned it to my best friend, who also loved it.

Not a bad story in here, and certainly wouldn't offend most anyone...well, except the prudes. Who wouldn't read this anyway. So, in conclusion, buy this book! It's a fun little read.
