Book Description

November 1, 1996
Nobody writes about gay archetypes with as much affection, insight, and killer wit as Robert Rodi--the unabashed author of Fag Hag and Closet Case. "Another plateful of giddy meringue from Rodi, the undisputed doyen of the effervescent gay novel of manners . . . the humor is merciless and swift".--Kirkus Reviews.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With titles like Rodi's (Fag Hag, Closet Case), subtlety is certainly not an issue; his latest gay-themed romp proves no exception. As Mitchell Sayer's Mame-ish mama sets out to join a Tibetan convent (in Wisconsin), she tells her lawyer son that he has a twin brother. Upright, uptight Mitch discovers that brother Donald is?drum roll, please?a drag queen, singing at Chicago's Tam-Tam Club as Kitten Kaboodle, the Doyenne of Despair. So begins a sporadically madcap tale of Boy Meets Brother, Boy Loses Brother, Boy Gets Brother?and (temporarily), Boy Becomes Brother. Unfortunately, for every amusing one-liner and vignette (a department-store cosmetics demo by a Middle European emigre is a gem), there's a misfire or a bit of heavy-handed philosophizing. Though this novel's parts are better than its whole, the story's gentle sweetness makes it hard to dislike. Ultimately, readers who can appreciate such drag names as Tequila Mockingbird, May Oui and Barbarella Fitzgerald will be tickled lavender by these escapades; others may believe, like one of Mitch's boyfriends, that "the only good queen is one who's been anointed... in Westminster Abbey."

From Library Journal

The author of What They Did to Princess Paragon (LJ 4/15/94) has fashioned a breezy, affectionate, behind-the-scenes look at the world of drag. Mitchell Sayer's very well ordered life as a gay urban professional is turned upside down when his adoptive mother tells him that he has a twin brother. A search takes Mitch to the Tam Tam Club, where he finds his brother performing as Kitten Kaboodle, the ever-fabulous doyenne of Chicago drag. The plot takes many twists and turns as Mitch learns to loosen up and love his brother rather than try to change him. We meet some other interesting characters along the way, including Mitch's ex-lover Simon, a leather queen. The surprise ending leaves the reader wondering just which twin is which. Rodi's wry humor carries the story along at a fast clip. Both gay and straight readers should enjoy this novel, and fans of last year's hit movie, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, should also take note. Recommended for adult fiction collections, particularly in urban public and academic libraries.?Howard E. Miller, Alliance Blue Cross & Blue Shield Lib., St. Louis

More About the Author

Robert Rodi (b.1956) was born in Chicago, a town seething with literary and musical energy, and he has spent his life immersed in their currents. His first novels, which quickly gained him cult status, were deftly drawn satires of the city's gay scene. While continuing to write fiction (most recently, "The Sugarman Bootlegs") he's branched out into nonfiction, the better to share his enthusiasm for the world of canine agility (in "Dogged Pursuit") and all things Italian, specifically the great Tuscan horse race, the Palio ("Seven Seasons In Siena").

He also writes comic books for both Vertigo and Marvel, pens a self-described "guerilla lit-crit" blog about Jane Austen called "Bitch In a Bonnet", and covers the local performing arts scene for The Huffington Post. He's a performer himself, being an auxiliary member of Chicago's esteemed monologuist ensemble BoyGirlBoyGirl; he's also the front man for the fusion rock band 7th Kind (whose CD "Sea Monster" is available on Amazon).

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading - kinda entertaining, March 9, 2000

This review is from: Drag Queen (Paperback)
Well, I bought this book because I never read any gay literature before and I thougt it was about time that I did so. "Drag Queen" is actually a good book. It's not a heartwarming novel or anything like that, but it's worth getting if you just want something to pass the time.

The characters are sometimes difficult to understand. I found myself asking, "Why are they doing this?" But that just adds to the confusion felt by the main character. The characters are well developed yet still retain some quality of superficiality, a common characteristic found even in "real" people in the gay scene.

The book did take on homophobia within the gay community and how some people band together to fight it when it comes from the outside while others turn the other cheek and try to ignore the truth.

However, this is not an activism book by any stretch. It a fun book that made me laugh and didn't take up a lot of my time. I would compare this book to films such as "Never Been Kissed" and "She's All That". Cute little films that do nothing more than entertain. I loved those films and this book was very good.

2.0 out of 5 stars I ususally like Rodi, but this one is not so good..., March 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Drag Queen (Paperback)
It's trite and cliche- and really boring- one thing Rodi's books rarely are. While it seems the author is attempting to let us inside the heads of the gay brothers seperated at birth, one never really gets it nor likes them and while the end is supposed to be sweet and funny, it just felt flat and silly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Rodi!, November 2, 2001

While I'm not certain Mr. Rodi will ever top his hilarious and wonderfully inciteful first novel "Fag Hag" this book makes a good go at it. The story of brothers separated at birth, one is an uptight corporate closeted man who recoils in horror at the thought that his sibling might in fact be a drag queen. A funny story that avoids the typical "Tragic Hero" status that many overly PC books give to Drag Queens. In this book she comes off as a fairly real person with some insecurities and a fabulous wardrobe.
