Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Holly Cefrey's High Speed Trains.

Gr. 4-7. Showcasing speed in sports and in public transit, books in the high-interest Built for Speed series feature attractive layouts and appealing use of color accents to complement their captioned, color photos. Each book opens with a historical perspective. Drag Racer covers innovations in the cars and the sport, takes a look at driving strategies and timing regulations, and describes the race environment. Sidebars offer interesting information as well as some statistics. In High Speed Trains, the more mechanically written volume, sidebars are devoted only to speed facts and records. The text covers history, design innovations, successful rapid rail systems around the world, and the future of fast-train service. The sturdy volumes will be useful for elementary-school reports and may attract older, reluctant readers as well. Brief bibliographies and online resources will ease research. Ellen Mandel
