5.0 out of 5 stars I thought it was a good movie
I read another review for this game before deciding to put my two cents in. First of all, if you can't like this game because of a Crystal Ball, because it's against your religious beliefs, then you shouldn't be watching Dragon Ball Z in the first place. I read another review for this game before deciding to put my two cents in. First of all, if you can't like this game because of a Crystal Ball, because it's against your religious beliefs, then you shouldn't be watching Dragon Ball Z in the first place. The show is, afterall, fiction. I personally like this game. It fills in some gaps from the show where you wonder, "Hey, what was everyone doing?" in the year that it took the Saiyans to get to Earth after Raditz died.

I've always hoped they'd make a RPG for DBZ, where it didn't always need to have buttons being bashed to get combos. This takes a little more thought, as it is a turn based game. I only wished that they had just went for the whole Dragon Ball universe, but hopefully they'll continue on with this spirit and make the rest of the Sagas in this way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid JRPG in the Dragon Ball Universe, December 28, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dragon Ball: Attack of the Saiyans (Video Game)
Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans (originally branded as Dragon Ball Kai in Japan, renamed domestically because Kai has not been licensed for international release at this time) is an RPG in the style of the SNES and PS1 greats. It offers a long adventure that takes players from the end of Dragon Ball through the battle with Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z.

The graphics are basically 2D sprites with some scaling. It works for what it is, and, appropriately enough, the colorful and bright imagery matches the overall tone of the series and the manga. It also features some memorable music in parts. The stylus controls of last year's Dragon Ball Origins are gone, replaced with traditional controls and menu options. Everything works well in this game.

There are a couple of negative aspects of this title. One is that, though it is a long game, some of its length seems artificial. It deviates from the story to have players engage in something that is little more than a glorified fetch quest every now and then. A second negative -more of a perspective issue, really- is that it's an easy game. Each save point completely restores the party's energy, and there are a good number of them scattered throughout the game.

A final issue is the voice acting. There is some limited voiceover work, primarily reserved for attack names during battle. The actors and actresses are those of the Japanese version. Fans of that version will, of course, be thrilled. Those who prefer the dub voices, particularly Sean Schemmel's Goku (Masako Nozawa, the Japanese voice actress, is a woman), will be a bit less pleased. The lack of a voiced dub is a bit lazy, but it is necessary to note that the Japanese cast does a great job with the few voiced bits in the game.

DBZ fans have probably already made up their minds about this one; if you're still undecided, it really is worth picking up. The game has numerous in-universe references that will make long-time fans happy to see. Overall, it's a solid product, one of the best DBZ games we've seen in a while. If you don't like DBZ, this game won't change your mind, though if you like classic RPGs, it's still worth a look.

I was stoked to see that DBZ finally made an RPG that's not about cards! And to tell you the truth it doesn't dissapoint. Sure it has some cons and whatnot, but believe me if you've played an JRPG and that's what you're expecting, that's what you'll get.
Sure with the story if you watched the Anime it looks like a pretty short story, but surprisingly it's a verry long game you get to play as the main Z heroes from that Saga,if i'm missing someone I guess it would be Chiaotzu, it would have been fun to play as him though. But still you get Yamcha,Tien,Krillin,Goku,Gohan and Piccolo. and they each have their own classic attacks like Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist, Goku's Spirit Bomb, Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon, Krillin's Destructo Disk, Gohan's RAAAAAAAAAGE! and Tien's Containment Wave(if you've seen Dragon Ball you know why that move is funny).

The cons are a little obvious....Goku, Piccolo and Gohan are the strongest characters....the rest will have a hard time keeping up. The leveling up and adding manually the stat gains it's not for everybody. The cutscenes, dialogues, whatever that isnt fighting its actually pretty cheaply done. Characters like King Yemma are drawn in the background and well it's boring and limited it's not their fault cause it's obviously not PS3/XBOX360, but you know...if you dont care about the story it's pretty boring lol. Good news is that you can skip that crap.

And the pros(saved the best for last), the bosses are pretty fun, you can costumize the characters to put them as you want, I myself am a big Yamcha fan,soo I made him as strong as ever. The story itself even though the cutscenes and animation is boring the story itself is verry interesting, fills a lot of plot holes, like what happened to Raditz, how did Piccolo and Gohan bonded, the training for the Saiyans, Emperor Pilaf has a part in the game,YOU CAN FIGHT VS. BROLY! and of course you will get like 12 or more hours of gameplay. In my opinion I like it more than Legacy of Goku GBA games.

Sooo if you got a Nintendo DS and already are tired of Pokemon, Mario, Dragon Quest, etc. This is a fresh new game about DBZ, it's an RPG the gameplay is easy to get into, addictive as hell, got it's funny moments. Scout ahead go to youtube see the raw gameplay, if it looks good give it a try, it's $20. And don't finish the game until you have fought Broly, capish? I give it a 8.5/10

4.0 out of 5 stars The best of the Dragonball Z games so far, May 25, 2010

This game is quite different from the other Dragon Ball Z games. It is a role playing game, although a simple one at that. My first thought as I turned played the game for the very first time was how disappointing it was to see the characters as such small sprites. It takes some getting used to. The storyline is pretty much the same as the other games and as the show although there is quite a bit of silly and pointless side missions which slow down the pace of the story a bit. There really is no introduction to the characters or the storyline in the game so if this is your first exposure to Dragon Ball Z, you'll be lost. Despite its flaws, I still enjoyed the game and the turn based battling style. I would venture to say that this is the best Dragon Ball Z game that I've played.

Dragon ball z attack of the saiyans is an awesome game. It is really fun. The only bad part about the game is you can`t connect with others and you can only be GOKU, LITTLE GOHAN, PICCILO, TIEN, YAMCHA, AND KRILLIN. Overall the game is awesome. This game can be challenging. This game is one of the best games in dragon ball z.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best DBZ RPGs of all Time, July 16, 2010

This review is from: Dragon Ball: Attack of the Saiyans (Video Game)
Finally a fresh idea for the incredibly, awesome and very popular Dragonball Z. This game has finally done something that hardly any other dbz game does: has new storylines!!! Even though I love the show, I can't stand playing the same storyline over and over so I was very pleased that this game had some new ones. The gameplay is pretty awesome and the sprites for the characters and the attacks are colorful and very detailed. The background is good too, giving it a feel to it. The fighting is fun, it may get repetitive but you don't concentrate on that, instead you focus on defeating the super tough bosses in the game. So the fighting will not get boring as you are challenged. The only con for this game are those little bubbles that show the characters emotions before they talk. It becomes a huge drag. But other than that a terrific RPG for DBZ, good work.

This is the first DBZ RPG game I have played, good animation, lot of exploration and combos to discover and the original Japanese voices but you only in battles not in cutscenes.

I recommended to fans of the series or RPG fans.

Dragon Ball: Attack of the Saiyans is a fun 2D RPG. Its like final fantasy but with Dragon Ball characters and specials. You get a limit break type of attack and you can also combo attacks with other party members to make a super attack. You can also swap out party members during battle. The game does not make use of the touch screen at all. Imagine my surprise when I tried tapping on the screen to make the character move and nothing happened. Pretty strange for a DS game not to use the touch screen. The other odd thing about this game is the most of the action appears on the top screen. The bottom screen is for menu commands. The game is also very easy. You level up within 3 or 4 fights and the fights are short. I thought after the a while the leveling up will slow down, but it didn't. So theres no need to level grind because by the time to walk to where the boss is, you would have leveled up from all the random encounters. If you love old school turn based rpgs but hate the frustration of level grinding, you should pick this game up.

Interestingly enough considering the title, it was a couple hours into the game before we even see a Saiyan at all, and the early missions center around Tien, Yamcha and Krillin having adventures in between the 22 and 23 tournaments. Thankfully, this means the game isn't what I feared, which was 20 hours of killing various colored Saibamen building up to a big boss fight.

The gameplay engine is a very strong turn-based JRPG system with martial arts flare and a lot of interesting combos. The Active Guard blocking system feels a little gimmicky and at times makes the game too easy, but I'd love to see it used again with a more original storyline.

One big flaw with the game is the translation of menu items isn't always clear, so when adding points to the "Sp" ability at the start of the game I wasn't clear if it was "Speed" or "Special Attacks," which later turned out to be labeled "Tc" (for technique I guess) even though all the other references call it either "Skill" or "Special."

The real problem though is that unlike its use in fighting games with a broader view of the overall series, it feels like very little of what you do in AotS really matters. The filler content is interesting to see, but at the end of the day everybody gets killed in the order they're supposed to at the end, and even though I had leveled Tien to the point where he was well stronger than Goku, Tien gets killed by Nappa in a cut scene and Goku beats Nappa handily.

I think the game could've been one of the best DBZ games and best JPRGs on the market if they had allowed for a more branching storyline that explored some of the what-ifs caused by leveling certain characters and by the filler stories. And it would've felt like less of a waste to level Yamcha up to lvl 40 if he didn't get insta-killed in a cutscene by something he could just as easily have beaten at lvl 25.
