I've always loved Dragonball, i was very excited when this came out, and when i bought it I was very confused and yet happy with what I saw, let me explain. I hope you have seen Dragonball the series before getting this dvd.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what to rate this film. There were some really good parts and some really bizarre parts. I suppose I'll just start from the beginning.

As far as I know, this film was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the anime (it started in 1986, and this film was made in 1996). Basically (in a way) it sort of re-tells how Goku met Bulma and...

I've always loved Dragonball, i was very excited when this came out, and when i bought it I was very confused and yet happy with what I saw, let me explain. I hope you have seen Dragonball the series before getting this dvd.

The Story itself has been changed. Goku meets people in a different order in a different place and such. For example, you may remember Goku meets Olong in a village, while in this dvd he finds him in the desert. As the movie goes on more and more stuff changes, soon your no longer looking at Dragonball, but at a whole new story altogether. this was both sad (being this is a DRAGONBALL remake, but also great that a new story was made)

The art was updated, looks more Dragonball GT'ish, then the older looking Dragonball art. This of course was great, and very nice looking.

The audio is great, the voices in both english and japanese were nice, and the sound quality was good.

the visuals were somewhat bad. At some times there were scratches in the film (minor, but you'll see them). I was hopeing they could fix this, but they didn't.

The dvd itself is ok. The menu is plain but nice, the extra's unfortunatly are just Trailers and Character Bios.

All together I rate the dvd 8/10. I suggest picking this up if you like Dragonball. I do NOT suggest getting this if your new or have never seen dragonball, because this really chages the story ALOT. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a revised version of goku's dragonball saga., May 5, 2003

There's nothing here of Goku's origin that a die hard fan hasn't seen before in one general form or another but the story is well done. Goku's origin has been revised and simplified. This revised saga is exciting and the script is very tight. The animation is GREAT!, far superior to typical dragonball animation. It is truly a movie that is animated. The camera angles used, pans and shots are just like a live movie. I really enjoyed this movie.

Basically (in a way) it sort of re-tells how Goku met Bulma and re-tells the adventures which occured in the anime.

Strangely enough, chronologically, the stuff that happens in the film is completely different than the anime/manga. That's what's really strange about it, really. I guess I really didn't like how they re-told the Dragon Ball story. Anybody new to the series who sees this will be utterly confused. Those with more experience with the show and those who have seen the entire Dragon Ball series may think differently, however.

I'll have to say that I like the "updated" Toriyama designs. Instead of looking like the original designs, they've been somewhat redrawn to look more like they did in Dragon Ball Z. I thought that was cool. I also really liked the animation sequences. The intense battle scenes were cool.

I didn't like how anti-climactic the ending was, either. I'm not going to say exactly what happened, but right when I thought the film was reaching a climax, it just ends, which peeves me a little. Why? I spent a lot of money on this item, and now I'm not so sure if I want to keep it.

Personally, if you have no idea whether you want this movie, you should rent it first. Perhaps I'll watch it a few more times before I make my final decision whether I want to keep it or not, but to me, this "re-telling" of Dragon Ball is just strange and confusing to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One, April 6, 2006

There's about a hundred dragonball related dvd's out, and the series is old and has definetely lost its fame, so I'm surprised that anyone is reading this interview. But if you have the least bit appreciation for this series, then don't miss this dvd. The dragonball series was good, but flawed, it became very very repetitive as the series continued. But this dvd is different, it offers a good story with great action. It's the ten year anniversary edition of the dragonball series (oddly enough, this movie was made 10 years ago), and despite its age, its still good. This defines dragonball pretty well, better than any other movie. The art has been updated to the GT art style, and the story is, unlike the acutal series, really good. The action is definetely movie quality, wheras most DB movies were more like tv specials. There are no real extras here, the only thing youll get from this is the movie, which should not be missed by anyone who has at one time enjoyed goku's adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Ball, but better!, December 9, 2008

While producing Dragon Ball GT, it was decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the series by making a new Dragon Ball movie, to be based on the original series.

It isn't uncommon for anime to release feature films that are often compressed and altered versions of the original series. This is what we get here. They combined the original Goku Saga with the Red Ribbon Army Saga. The whole thing is done beautifully with GT style animation, giving the old series a much needed facelift. Many of the characters, villains in particular, get redesigns to suit the new animation style better as well.

Due to the fact that they had to cram so much into so little space, many things had to get 'cut'. Veterans of the series will be disappointed to find no trace of Mercenary Tao, and Goku never transforms into his giant Ape form. What's more, many of the fights are very short compared to the original anime. Goku's fight with Yamcha is comprised solely of Yamcha hitting Goku with the Wolf-Fang-Fist. While it's nice to see this move updated, the fight is far too short. On the other hand, Android 8 actually fights in this feature, not once but twice! The old Android never saw any action in the original series, so that's a nice twist. Here's the story for those new to the series.

A young girl named Bulma runs into (literally) a young boy with incredible strength. After a brief confrontation, they exchange introductions and Bulma learns the boys name as Goku (Dragon Ball Z - Bardock: The Father of Goku, the very same boy from this story). She tells him about the legend of the Dragon Balls, and how whoever collects them all gets one wish. Goku agrees to join Bulma in her journey.

The two children encounter many people along the way. They make new friends with Oulong, Yamcha, Puar, Turtle, and Master Roshi. They also encounter the evil Red Ribbon Army, who are also after the dragon balls. Ultimately, it's up to Goku and his incredible strength to overcome the villainous Red Ribbon Army.

I highly recommend this DVD over the dated (and hard to find) original series (or at least the beginning of). It's a good watch for children as well. Obviously, fans might want to use caution. While the updated animation looks nice, they do change a lot of things. Whether or not that matters depends on your opinion of the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, June 26, 2007
This review is from: Dragon Ball - Path to Power (Uncut) (DVD)
Dragon Ball: The Path to Power is my favorite Dragon Ball film. The animation is great, the story is great, everything is great. In one scene, Goku takes out the enire Red Ribbon Army is one shot. The english dub is the best one yet, the jokes were perfectly translated. I recommend this film to any fan of Dragon Ball or anime/manga in general.

This is the way I wish Goku's story would have been told in the first place. The animation looks better then the Dragonball series. When Goku fighting the Red Ribon Army looks nothing like a kids show like World War 2.

Even though it's not out yet, I think it will be a great movie, even though it will have scenes from the series on it. You would know if you've seen Curse of the Blood Rubies. It shows Bulma running into Goku and sends him flying with his fish. So, in conclusion, if you're a super Dragon Ball/Z/GT fan, this will be a good one!!!!!!
