4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but could have been better..., November 5, 2009

This review is from: Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo (Video Game)
Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of the original Dragon Ball series, more than it's younger brothers Z and GT. After being disappointed by the movie Dragon Ball Evolution, I was looking for a new and better outlet for Dragon Ball and found this game. There aren't that many video games modeled after the original DB and this the first one to be released to North American home consoles that wasn't "americanized" and the wasn't a portable. The main game is in the style of an old school beat-em up but with 3D graphics and keeping with the old school style, this game is pretty tough. Not Mega Man Or Ninja Gaiden Hard though, you know that good kind of hard. You have to keep in mind that this is Kid Goku...the storyline takes place when he was a strong, kinda stupid kid learning about the world for the first time. There are only a few things that I found annoying about the game:

- The bosses take a little too long to kill unless you use a Kamehameha. This wouldn't be a problem if it were just General Tao or King Piccolo that this happens but it's with almost every boss. This is part of the reason the game is just a little tough and kinda long.

- There is no co-op play...that was pretty disappointing to me. Beat-em ups are always a lot more fun and a lot easier when you're playing with friends. This could have saved this game from being just above average. The only time you can play with someone else is during the tournament mode.

- By far the best thing about the original DB series is the humor. In this game there's hardly any. The tone of the story mode is a little too much like DBZ instead. I wish they would have added a little more humor in this game.

- The tournament mode is pretty stale. It's reasonable that the fighters can't fly around like they do in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. It's appropriate but it still doesn't save it from being kind of boring. I would have liked better if they didn't include this feature and try to make it like a co-op beat-em up.

Bottom line: If you are fan of the original Dragon Ball series I recommend it but to everyone else I probably wouldn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walk down memory lane., October 22, 2009

I love Dragonball (who doesn't). This game was actually a 2.5D side scrolling adventure RPG made for the Wii. If you are familiar with the dragonball RPGS for gameboy advance, this is something similar to the experience you will be able to play on the Wii.

The story is pretty much Young Goku's adventures of the original Dragonball series but the story is more an emphasis on the King Piccolo ark line.

The controls are simple and easy to get into, the game play itself is a bit repetitive since it is mostly side scrolling platforming, fighting, and puzzle solving. Even though it is repetitive, it's not boring when it comes to the boss battles, many hardcore Dragonball fans will remember the old characters both heroes and villains of the series.

The cutscenes are also very well done since it was made by the same development team that made DBZ:T3 on the same model engine.

If you are not familiar with Dragonball, this is not for you, but if Dragonball is a part of you, this is a good game for the price for those needing a break from DBZ.
