Dragon: The Bruce Lee story game! (long review), August 23, 2010
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (Video Game)
In 1993,"Dragon: The Bruce Lee story" was released based on the film released the same year...this game is the only 2-D fighting game that features our favorite Sifu: Jun Fan aka Bruce Lee! There have been many Bruce Lee clones, including fei long ( SUPER STREET FIGHTER II SERIES) and Liu Kang (MORTAL KOMBAT SERIES), neither of which captured the essence of Bruce, the legend... Fei Long does the best impersonation ie: Movie star/martial artist, even mimics Bruce's famous "howls"
This game is truely a treat for the fans! it loosely follows the film as best as the GENESIS' abilities/ratings would allow, and the movie was based on Bruce Lee's wife's, Linda Lee Cadwell, book "Bruce Lee: The Man I Only Knew". What i find makes this game so special is that the sprite used as Bruce Lee is modeled after Bruce himself, not the actor of the movie, Jason Scott Lee. So this game pays homage to the man, the legend! The story line in the game is unfolded via clips/stills from the movie and short excerpts/text from the film as well, though the dialogue has been very watered down. Don't expect to get the full jist of the film with the game, rather after watching the film you will instantly remember scenes from the movie in the game.
Unfortunately for the game, Bruce is the only selectable character (fine by me), but with multi-player it can become redundant; everybody wants to be Bruce Lee! also, there are no alternate costumes for other players, just different color pants (yellow pants are cool; GAME OF DEATH) This game also features 3-player mode which can be played co-operatively in the story mode, or pitted agaisnt each other in the battle mode. What makes this game unique from the other 2-D fighting games is that it is almost set up like a beat 'em up ie: more than one opponent can be faced at one time; which is nice because i remember Bruce Lee fighting hoards of enemies and notable one-on-ones with BAD-A$$ BOSS' !
graphics: 3.5 out of 5
it wasnt pushing the SEGA GENESIS' hardware capabilities to the limit, but i find it better in style than most 2-D fighters of that time. Again, Bruce Lee himself has GREAT graphics! His movements are nicely portrayed in this game, with very fluid animations! even better animations than SFII and FATAL FURY<---both exceptionally better in overall presentation, but neither payed as-close attention to character detail/movement as in this game. The designers did a great job paying respect to the man! (this isn't the 1984 atari2600/commadore64 pixelated lego bruce lee) The stages are very nice and the level designers did a terrific job portraying the set/s of the film! it's nice being able to fight on the set of THE BIG BOSS and ENTER THE DRAGON!!!
There are some background animations and rotoscope, but nothing that WOWS. overall, it's just really interesting to see Bruce Lee and locations from his films in a 16-bit video game.
gameplay/controls 4 out of 5
this game is for veteran fighters that like to take their time learning the "feel" and techincalities of the game, and for that purpose this game rocks! It is NOT a pick-up-and-play or button mashing beat-em-up, rather there is a rather complex fighting style using combos and a "CHI METER". Bruce Lee has three variations/styles in fighting depending on the power-ups you collect during gameplay (they randomly appear as ying-yangs atop the screen) Bruce Lee, stock, can kick some butt: His speed and power is present from the get go, but you wont believe how amped he gets once his "CHI" is up. His gets pumped up and his punches and kicks move at LIGHTENING SPEED! no kidding! once his CHI meter has reached it's peak, alas, the nunchakus come flying out do serious damage! you can alternate between his styles/nunchakus to conserve "CHI" in ur chi-meter. I recommend ONLY playing this game a SEGA 6-BUTTON controller; it is the only way i have figured out to change his styles and/or use nunchakus (you have to press+HOLD the MODE button while pressing one of three punch buttons to alternate among the three styles. This game DOES NOT feature the kind of special moves seen in SFII or any/most fighting games...that's right, NO down, foward+punch projectiles etc!! You'll have to rely on pure fighting skills, speed, and strategy to advance, but dont worry, there's plenty of bone-crunching action and plenty of homage paid to the LEGEND!!! Lemme reiterate this game is tough! this game is three players so if you have a "MULTI-TAP" you can go toe-to-toe w/2 buddies or play co-op, but you will all play as Bruce Lee. You only have 3 lives TOTAL during the story mode, so you mayhaps be not beating this game in your 1st sitting. And the phantom, final stage/final life, (Bruce Lee's inner-fear/inner-demon) is ridiculously hard!!!! i've seen videos on youtube, and whoever was playing is indeed a PRO, beating the phantom PERFECT!
so it is possible to kick-butt in this game...also, a nice treat for the martial artist, as a mini-game, there is a stage where you have to pratice on some sort of WING CHUN WOODEN DUMMY!
sound 2.5 out of 5
the music is not memorable; not like SFII or MKseries, or other games for that matter. the beats are decent enough to produce some head bopping, but it won't stick w/you. the sound effects are pretty good and does a convincing job that you're getting punished or punishing! One thing i DO like is that when you win a match/level/round Bruce does that thing w/his voice...i thought that was great! but that's it!!! =(
Overall, if you are a Bruce Lee fan and are a classic gamer/collector and you don't already own this, you should pick it up! you wont be braggin about this game to all your friends, only the bruce lee fans. really that's what makes this game special: BRUCE LEE; and for a mere couple of bucks, you cant go wrong...3 out of 5 total
