A Killer Second Installment of the Joe Ledger Series,
This review is from: The Dragon Factory (Paperback)
Patient Zero was easily my favorite book of 2009...as a lover of fast-paced thrillers and amazing action sequences, Maberry hit the spot! In Patient Zero Joe Ledger came out swinging, shooting and slicing as he faced off against psycho Islamic terrorists and hordes of ZOMBIES! Seriously...could you think of a more evil combo??
As the latest installment of the Joe Ledger series, Dragon Factory lived up to and exceeded all of my expectations! This is an EPIC story, with some certifiably insane villains, vicious plot twists and again...NON-STOP ACTION!!! Zombies and terrorists were pretty great, but Maberry upped the stakes in DF and includes genetically engineered super soldiers, Nazis, Super rich/evil albino twins, a host of mythological creatures, Russian mercenaries and a looming extinction wave!!! With all of this new evil introduced, Maberry's unrivaled ability to write action/fight scenes, and the intelligent story line, I'm putting my money on this being my favorite book of 2010! Keep writing killer books Maberry...I can't wait for the 3rd Ledger novel out next year!

The second novel in Maberry's Joe Ledger series starts very soon after Patient Zero left off, with Joe visiting the gravesite of one of his oldest and dearest friends. The problem is, he's a wanted man, and the man that wants him is none other than the Vice President of the United States. He's sent his goon squad to pick up Joe, but Joe has other plans... Taking off like lightning and never letting up, The Dragon Factory is a cross-genre, gritty, fun, roller coaster of a ride! I loved Patient Zero, and The Dragon Factory doesn't disappoint, in fact, I think I loved it more! Told in first person POV of Joe Ledger, my favorite tough, snarky ex-cop, (with frequent forays into third person with one of the book's star psychos, Cyrus Jacoby) it grabs you by the throat, and doesn't let you go until the last page! What's not to love? Joe and Echo Team have to deal with everything from psychotic Nazi clones, to an organization called the Cabal, which is out to achieve ethnic cleansing on a worldwide scale. Add to that DNA manipulated beasts, a race of slaves called the New Men, bio-terror on an epic scale, a pair of the creepiest, ickiest (yes, icky), twisted (had to throw that in there), albino (yes, albino) twins, and a boy hero that will break your heart and reaffirm your belief in the power of the human spirit. Maberry throws all of this at you with his usual perfect pacing and style, and the depth of detail and research put into this book is, as always, impeccable. One thing that Maberry does in his novels is something that you don't see a lot of in books that are this action oriented. In the midst of all this chaos and adrenaline, in Joe Ledger he's created a character that not only kicks ass, but he has a heart and soul, and it comes across in nearly every scene that he's in. In Joe, he gives us a hero to root for, if for no other reason than he is intrinsically good. Joe is not superhuman, and he doesn't have supernatural abilities. He's an everyman with, admittedly, rather unique talents that we can all identify with in some way. In The Dragon Factory, Maberry takes topics that are complex and sometimes terrifying, and delivers them with humanity and sometimes humor. There were moments during this book (in particular one) that brought me to tears, as with Patient Zero, and Maberry shows us that humanity does not have to be sacrificed for the sake of an exciting read! This series is absolutely not to be missed, and I recommend it to anyone that loves thrillers, horror, suspense, espionage, fantasy, and all of the above! I am breathlessly anticipating the third book in the Joe Ledger Series, The King of Plagues, due out March 29th!

This was another random pick from our local library's new fiction shelf. This was fast paced, gritty and just far out enough to keep my attention. For the last half of the book I couldn't put it down. The moral of the story: there is real Evil in this world and it has names and faces. Short of giving away key elements of the story line, suffice it to say that the evils of Eugenics and Nazi racial programs did not die with Adolf Hilter. The story threw curves that caught me off guard, and even had a lesson in morality. We are who we choose to be, not what we are born. I will definitely read another Maberry book, probably all of them!

Jonathan Maberry, like Simon Clark and Dan Simmons, began his career as predominantly a 'horror' writer but has since proven an uncanny ability to cross genre lines and sucessfully create highly readable tales in multiple genres.THE DRAGON FACTORY is the 2nd book in the Joe Ledger - Department of Military Sciences series (soon to be TV show). This might be the wildest and most difficult to describe novel in the series as there is so much going on. Particulary, the unbelievable genetic experimentation and attempts at global domination, in lesser hands, would have been overblown and contrived. Under the guiding hand of Maberry, THE DRAGON FACTORY steams along at a rapid pace (a global Extinction Clock heads each chapter) as two rival groups of evil genetic experimenters have defied the laws of nature by creating everything from bezerkers (neanderthal-like super-men), radical human-animal hybrids and even mythological characters (unicorns, dragons). At the heart of the principle group of geneticists is a team of evil geniuses being led by the Nazi Master Race teachings of the infamous Josef Mengele. How will Ledger and team defeat these madman who are planning the extinction of most of the world's population? Forget about the length of this read --- you will not be able to put this book down until the very last stunning page!

Mythology, Martial Arts and all kinds of Kick Assness!,

Firstly, I will state that I am not a great reviewer. But Maberry's Joe Ledger series is one of my all time favorite series of novels.
Joe Ledger is one of the most complex characters I've ever read and the amazing balance of gritty fight scenes, dark emotional demon wrestling and highly descriptive gun play holds something for everyone. The Dragon Factory is one of the most intensely, emotionally packed novels I've read by him thus far. I attended one of Mr. Maberry's readings recently where he revealed a spoiler about the ending of the book and while I was shaking my fist in a "Oh No!" motion, I still was extremely moved and enthralled with the ending. Jonathan Maberry is a writer everyone should read and have on their bookshelves. I cannot recommend this book enough. And check out his other works, you will NOT be disappointed!

Tom Clancy with a scifi twist. The story is non stop with great historical tie ins and implications of good science gone bad. As a big scifi/fantasy reader I loved how this genre was combined with the espionage/military thriller genre. A great read!

I loved this book. Jonathan Maberry is a genius. I just hope the The King Of Plagues isn't the last book in the series. Joe Ledger is a character that you can really get into.

This is comic book action in book form at its finest. Tough guys, villains, monsters fill the pages of this kick ass action extravaganza. But it's clear that Mr. Maberry uses TONS of research, giving the reader realistic problems and scientific ideas to learn and allow the mind to wonder, what if. Any action, thriller, military, monster fan will love this book, as well as the previous, Patient Zero.
