Book Description

With the Dragon Wars over, Creel finds herself bored with life as a seamstress. Then word comes that a bordering country has been breeding dragons in preparation for an invasion. Never one to sit around, Creel throws herself headlong into an adventure that will reunite her with her dragon friend Shardas, pit her against a vicious new enemy and perhaps rekindle a friendship with Prince Luka that seems to have gone cold. Funny, heart-felt, and action packed, this is a sequel that will satisfy on every level.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–8—In this lively sequel to Dragon Slippers (Bloomsbury, 2007), plucky heroine Creel is again plunged into adventure. Citatie, a country in the south, has declared war on Feravel, and the soldiers are sure to succeed because they will be mounted on hundreds of dragons enslaved or bred for combat. Creel, an enterprising dressmaker and Feravel's resident expert on these winged beasts, begs the king to allow her to enlist the help of local dragons to try and stop the attack. She works with her friend Marta, a mute soldier named Tobin (Marta's fiancé), and Prince Luka (Creel's love interest)—and several winged comrades—to discover the true power behind Citatie's dragon force and to try to and save her homeland. This medieval fantasy, reminiscent of works by Patricia C. Wrede or Gail Carson Levine, is fast paced and entertaining, and filled with honorable, evil, and quirky characters—both human and dragon. Creel and Marta are both headstrong and enterprising, and their escapades make for an engaging read. This book stands alone, but readers familiar with the first title will better understand the details of Creel's world.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

From Booklist

This follow-up to Dragon Slippers (2007) continues the fairy-tale adventures of Creel, an orphan who escaped coldhearted relatives and, with the help of new dragon friends, found a new life as a talented seamstress in the city. In this equally enjoyable installment, Creel grows restless with her sewing business and jumps at another opportunity for magical adventure when her country is threatened. Fans of the first book will find the same strengths here: the imaginatively detailed scenes; the thrilling, spell-fueled action; the possibility of romance with a prince; and the appealing, brave heroine. Grades 6-9. --Gillian Engberg

More About the Author

It's all about the books. Friends, family, school, "real jobs", they were just obstacles to be tackled so that I could return to my true love: books. All I have ever wanted in this world is to read and write books. My criteria for choosing a purse is that it must be able to fit a paperback book inside. I took books on my honeymoon, and bought more while we were there. I picked my major because it looked like I would get to read a lot of books, and also I thought it would provide me with interesting background information for my own books (which it did). From the time I was twelve on up, I told people that I wanted to be a writer. When they said, "So, you'll teach and then maybe try to write a book?" I would just shake my head. No, I was a writer, and that was all I wanted to do. So over the years until I got published, I lived in Idaho, in New Jersey and Delaware, and in Utah, because it didn't matter. I could read and write anywhere. I've worked at a wedding invitation factory (Bet you didn't know they made them in big scary factories, did you?), at a video store (back at the birth of DVD), at libraries and bookstores, and even been an office lady at a school while I waited to get published. I knew that I would be published eventually, because . . . well, I just had to be.

Now, don't get me wrong, I have other interests. I took eight years of German, four of Norwegian, and even studied Old Norse so that I could read the great Viking sagas in the original language. I knit like a maniac: hats, scarves, sweaters, dog sweaters, socks, felted purses, you name it. I play the piano and viola, love to travel and to watch movies.

But mostly, it's about the books.

My daughter and I loved the first book and eagerly awaited the second, which can make it harder to enjoy if expectations are huge. This one does not disappoint! Plenty of action, character development flesh out an original and intriguing story line. Luka and Creel's relationship is a quiet thread throughout, but is challenged by other royal attention. Dragons are used for nefarious purposes...or are they? I hate to say anything about the plot because the less you know going into it, the better. Enrapturing for younger readers and enjoyable for adults as well, this book was wonderfully satisfying! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Flight Soars!, May 8, 2009

Just Me (Far Far Away) - See all my reviews
Once again, Creel entertained me on every page. I love how consistent the characters are in this book series. Each character - dragon and humans alike - has a distinct personality and a believable role to play in the plot. Creel has never been a damsel in distress, which I've always liked, but even better, she is usually the first to speak up and persuade others to have courage. And Jessica Day George does this in a realistic way, not how some writers try to tell you a character is a hero by using forced, cliché circumstances.

I also like that Luka is an important part of the story first, and a love interest second. He and Creel have a cute but mature relationship, where they don't swoon all the time, but rather have a true friendship and mutual respect for one another's opinions and talents. I LOVE that. I'm so tired of tortured, brooding men showing up in children's literature - who somehow still need to be saved by the girl who keeps tripping over things. That isn't at all what you find in Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight. Everyone has their moments of needing support, and everyone has their moments of triumph. The writing is spectacular in that way without ever feeling forced.

Yet another thing I like about these books is that Creel has a full cast of genuine friends who serve different purposes in her life. They all come together to create snappy, realistic dialogue, and a fun plot.

Another GREAT novel by Jessica Day George! I always look forward to new releases by her.

4.0 out of 5 stars enchanting fantasy for tween girls, December 16, 2008

This review is from: Dragon Flight (Paperback)
In this sequel to the popular Dragon Slippers, we find the heroine Creel, seamstress and former heroine of the Dragon Wars, settling down to a life making ball gowns when news comes of a neighboring kingdom training dragons for an invading army. Creel's past friendship with the dragon king, Shardas, makes her the ideal candidate to save the day.
I think this is a wonderful series for tween girls, with a strong heroine and brave, magnificently described dragons. The combination of humor and fantasy is infectious. There is a suggested romance with Prince Luka but no sexual content at all.
