Citatie, a country in the south, has declared war on Feravel, and the soldiers are sure to succeed because they will be mounted on hundreds of dragons enslaved or bred for combat. Creel, an enterprising dressmaker and Feravel's resident expert on these winged beasts, begs the king to allow her to enlist the help of local dragons to try and stop the attack. She works with her friend Marta, a mute soldier named Tobin (Marta's fiancé), and Prince Luka (Creel's love interest)—and several winged comrades—to discover the true power behind Citatie's dragon force and to try to and save her homeland. This medieval fantasy, reminiscent of works by Patricia C. Wrede or Gail Carson Levine, is fast paced and entertaining, and filled with honorable, evil, and quirky characters—both human and dragon. Creel and Marta are both headstrong and enterprising, and their escapades make for an engaging read. My daughter and I loved the first book and eagerly awaited the second, which can make it harder to enjoy if expectations are huge. This one does not disappoint! Plenty of action, character development flesh out an original and intriguing story line. Luka and Creel's relationship is a quiet thread throughout, but is challenged by other royal attention. Dragons are used for nefarious purposes...or are they? I hate to say anything about the plot because the less you know going into it, the better. Enrapturing for younger readers and enjoyable for adults as well, this book was wonderfully satisfying! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

This was a great book! If you like adventure, it's in here. I thought this was an exciting book! Some people are saying that there was no romance, it wasn't funny, etc. I think Luka was involved a lot in the story! You'll just have to find out for yourself! I think it was as good as the first! : )

Once again, Creel entertained me on every page. I love how consistent the characters are in this book series. Each character - dragon and humans alike - has a distinct personality and a believable role to play in the plot. Creel has never been a damsel in distress, which I've always liked, but even better, she is usually the first to speak up and persuade others to have courage. And Jessica Day George does this in a realistic way, not how some writers try to tell you a character is a hero by using forced, cliché circumstances.

I also like that Luka is an important part of the story first, and a love interest second. He and Creel have a cute but mature relationship, where they don't swoon all the time, but rather have a true friendship and mutual respect for one another's opinions and talents. I LOVE that. I'm so tired of tortured, brooding men showing up in children's literature - who somehow still need to be saved by the girl who keeps tripping over things. That isn't at all what you find in Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight. Everyone has their moments of needing support, and everyone has their moments of triumph. The writing is spectacular in that way without ever feeling forced.

Yet another thing I like about these books is that Creel has a full cast of genuine friends who serve different purposes in her life. They all come together to create snappy, realistic dialogue, and a fun plot.

Another GREAT novel by Jessica Day George! I always look forward to new releases by her.
