My daughter and I loved the first book and eagerly awaited the second, which can make it harder to enjoy if expectations are huge. This one does not disappoint! Plenty of action, character development flesh out an original and intriguing story line. Luka and Creel's relationship is a quiet thread throughout, but is challenged by other royal attention. Dragons are used for nefarious purposes...or are they? I hate to say anything about the plot because the less you know going into it, the better. Enrapturing for younger readers and enjoyable for adults as well, this book was wonderfully satisfying! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Dragon Flight Soars!,

Once again, Creel entertained me on every page. I love how consistent the characters are in this book series. Each character - dragon and humans alike - has a distinct personality and a believable role to play in the plot. Creel has never been a damsel in distress, which I've always liked, but even better, she is usually the first to speak up and persuade others to have courage. And Jessica Day George does this in a realistic way, not how some writers try to tell you a character is a hero by using forced, cliché circumstances.
I also like that Luka is an important part of the story first, and a love interest second. He and Creel have a cute but mature relationship, where they don't swoon all the time, but rather have a true friendship and mutual respect for one another's opinions and talents. I LOVE that. I'm so tired of tortured, brooding men showing up in children's literature - who somehow still need to be saved by the girl who keeps tripping over things. That isn't at all what you find in Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight. Everyone has their moments of needing support, and everyone has their moments of triumph. The writing is spectacular in that way without ever feeling forced. Yet another thing I like about these books is that Creel has a full cast of genuine friends who serve different purposes in her life. They all come together to create snappy, realistic dialogue, and a fun plot. Another GREAT novel by Jessica Day George! I always look forward to new releases by her.

enchanting fantasy for tween girls,

This review is from: Dragon Flight (Paperback)
In this sequel to the popular Dragon Slippers, we find the heroine Creel, seamstress and former heroine of the Dragon Wars, settling down to a life making ball gowns when news comes of a neighboring kingdom training dragons for an invading army. Creel's past friendship with the dragon king, Shardas, makes her the ideal candidate to save the day.
I think this is a wonderful series for tween girls, with a strong heroine and brave, magnificently described dragons. The combination of humor and fantasy is infectious. There is a suggested romance with Prince Luka but no sexual content at all.

I read this book with my 9 year old daughter. She had to read Dragon Slippers for school and we liked it so much we had to buy Dragon Flight. Jessica Day George is a great writer. She appeals to readers in any stage of life. This was a well thought out, intriguing book. The characters are very realistic and interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have also read Sun, Moon, Ice and Snow. Another wonderful book by Jessica Day George. I can't wait for her next book.

Great Sequel, leaves you wanting more!,

I loved this book almost as well as Dragon Slippers. The new dragons introduced in the story were great and the plot was wonderful. Creel also continued to grow as a character. The only disapointment was that the romance between Creel and Luca felt a little flat, as they had little contact in the book, which made it somewhat unaffecting emotionally. I also would have liked to see a little more of the other characters other than the dragons, but it was wonderful. Fans of Creel's world won't be disapointed. The ending does leave a possibility for a third book, so let's hope we get one! I kind of doubt it thought given that she didn't even plan on the sequel itself. My only other qualm about the book is the artwork. I would have preferred the original artist. The trade paper version of Dragon Slipper came with a horrible new cover to match this new artist, and it is a very poor fit and rendition in my opinion, which I shared with Bloomsbury. Please do so yourself if you agree and maybe they will re-release with new cover art eventually. It would sell better at any rate!

I just have one question. Both books so far are about controlling dragons, correct? So why hasn't anyone invented a way to control humans? It seems rather strange to me that no one has thought of this yet.

A solid sequel,
This review is from: Dragon Flight (Dragon Adventures) (Paperback)
Creel's quiet life as a successful seamstress is again interrupted by meddling monarchs when a southern kingdom declares war on Creel's country. Complicating matters, and invariably entangling Creel into the center of the conflict, is the ensorcelled army of dragons employed by the enemy kingdom. Danger and prejudices against dragons run high, and it is up to Creel and her friends to diffuse the situation.
While the overarching plot idea in this story is very similar to the first (oh no, bespelled dragons attacking the kingdom!), it works just as well as the first time and doesn't feel boring or recycled. The strength of the characters also makes up for any weaknesses in the plot. Creel is again the main character, but all of her friends (both human and dragon) from the first book make an appearance in this sequel and most have increasingly developed roles. The fluffy fun and sweetness of the first, as well as the gorgeous descriptions of embroidery and fabric, are carried over into this second installment to great success. If you liked the first one, then it's safe to say you'll like the second. My only complaint is that Creel was just a little too gung-ho about the dragons and this sometimes led to irrational outbursts. That was annoying, but not overly so and didn't detract enough to lower the rating. It isn't absolutely necessary to read the first book in order to understand this second book, but they really should be read in order. If the second book is read first, then much of the plot of the first book is spoiled. Also, there are enough references to the events of the first book that that, while not necessary to understand, add depth and back-story. There is a third book in the series, but this second book, much like the first, ties up all of the major events of the story and does not end on a cliffhanger. Jessica Day George is a solid pick for readers looking for a light, feel-good story with likable characters. Recommended.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jessica Day George! I have all of her books and her Dragon Slipper trilogy is my favorite. it's even on my favorites shelf.
Creel and the others are back! Creel has settled into the lifestyle of a dressmaker... but not really. When her dragon friends need her help Creel jumps at the chance (especially since this will also take her to Prince Luka's side). It bring back old friends, and they make some new ones. This book is epic in so many ways with a compeling storyline and many funny parts. I suggest any books by this author.

Dragon Flight,

I loved this sequel to Dragon Slippers. We pick right back up with the adventures of Creel and Prince Luka. Creel now has her own dress shop and has quite a bit of business including making the trousseau for the new queen-to-be and helping her friend Marta design and sew her wedding dress. But with Shardas and Queen Velika laying low so they can rest and recover and with Luka out of the country on dipolmatic prince duties things are not as exciting as Creel might want.
Things definitely get more exciting though when Prince Luka writes to Creel from the southern country where he had been saying to say that the king planned to destroy Feravel and every country in between. Worse, the king has an army of dragons and riders. This is, of course, more than Creel can stand since the dragons are obviously being coerced into doing human fighting by some sort of evil alchemy. I very much enjoyed seeing Creel and Luka again and was pleased by the progress all the characters made within the book. Things wrap up beautifully for not just Luka and Creel but for Marta and Tobin, Shardas and Velika and all the dragons. For being an unplanned book things certainly tied up nicely. |
