This review is from: Dragon Forge: Draconic Prophecies, Book 2 (The Draconic Prophecies) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was jonesing for an Eberron fix and I'd exhausted the available supply of Keith Baker novels - The Draconic Prophecies fills that need but doesn't feel as satisfying. It does feel like a reader needs to be familiar with the 3.5 rules more so than they are familiar with literary conventions in the genre. When Wyatt is cooking, you get that rush of feeling like you're deep in a game, a kick-ass D'n'D combat session that is so orthodox that can see a 5' grid in front of you. When he goes off the boil, the character development interludes feel flat and cliché ridden; once the grid is gone, you're listening to teenage voices "roleplaying" as adult characters. The plot is painfully convoluted and what starts out as an earth shattering Prophecy, ends up feeling a bit dull, as each fight is dominated by characters "predestined" to survive. It's great material if you're running an Eberron campaign, but not so great if you're looking for a good fantasy novel. I'm not a hater, but about 20 pages in I was struggling to go the distance.
