About the Author

Emily Drake lives in a sand castle by the sea…well, actually, it’s a dusty house full of wonderful old books, cats, and a rambunctious cocker spaniel puppy. And, on a good day when the smog clears, you can see the Pacific Ocean. When she’s not reading or talking with the cats or playing with the puppy, she is thinking of Bailey-isms and writing. Somewhere in the house is a grown-up daughter who likes to read and write histories of the fantastic and brings home pottery from class which looks as if it must have been made in another realm, so she fits in extremely well. Emily is married to a nice gentleman who works very hard in the real world and is often a bit bemused by the goings-on in the sand castle but has a good sense of humor about it all. There are other sons and a daughter who are scattered to the Trade Winds but who write and call home often. All in all, a good day is one in which books can be read and written and enjoyed by anyone Emily can reach. At the moment, the pup only considers a book as a good chew-toy, but she’s hoping he’ll outgrow that. Emily does not normally talk about herself like this, but the cats insisted upon it, like royalty.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Series that Bests Harry Potter, April 10, 2004
By
I picked this up at the bookstore near my home because I always buy a book and thought this one would be, at the very least, interesting. From the first line, I was hooked. Emily Drake's expert writing leads you on a marvelous adventure in which magic is very, very different than JK Rowling's world.

Another thing I love is that the characters are very well developed. Piece by piece you are offered insights into the lives of Bailey, Ting, Jason, Trent, Henry, and the rest of the delightful cast. Everyone has a story to tell, and Emily Drake expertly tells them. A marvelous series in which magick can be harnessed by using ordinary stones like amethyst, Ms. Drake leads us on a wonderful adventure into a new and unique branch of fantasy and magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable, June 4, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Not prose-perfect, but neither are some of those internet-novels popping up in publication lately, and some of those are better than mainstream books. Even J.K. Rowling took her lumps from smug insiders who were coughing up sour grapes all over the place.

Some characters are very well developed in The Magickers while others are semi-neglected. Adult characters at first were a little one dimensional. Some interesting ideas regarding magic, and it's obvious time and thought was put into it. I had a good time reading this. But they need to do something about those covers. They're atrocious and don't do the contents justice - everyone has receding hairlines and are wearing the latest in yuppie sportswear. Did the artist even read the books? Almost turned me off to the books until someone told me to read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story filled with action, adventure, and more!, December 18, 2004

I have been reading the Magicker series ever since it came out. I have fallen in love with these charcaters and find that this series is just as good, if not better, than Harry Potter. Jason has gripped my heart many times and I have found my heart racing along with his during his trails of fear, heartache, and betrayal. The characters in this story makes me want to believe that they are real and that they will all survive what is happening to them. This book in the series left me baffled and my heart racing. I can't wait to read the next one and many more!
