Editorial Reviews

Review

"Filled with magic, mythology and mystery, this creative story will enchant longtime fans of the series as well as newcomers. Emmy’s combination of sass and childlike behavior will resonate with young readers heading toward their preteen years." --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Kate Klimo first got the idea for this book many years ago when her three sons were small and she came across a geode lying among the rolled-up socks in one of their sock drawers. Now that her sons are all grown up, she has finally found the time to write the story down. When she is not writing, Kate is a children s book publisher. She lives in upstate New York with her husband, Harry, three horses, and one grandcat.

John Shroades is the illustrator of The Dragon in the Sock Drawer by Kate Klimo. His work has appeared on game box covers and magazine covers and in many games, articles, limited edition lithographs, and fine art galleries. He loves to create whimsical images of people, monsters, animals, robots, and contraptions that express the many different moods we all feel. John lives in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in North Bend, Washington, with his wife, Connie, and two boys, Jacob and Adam.

As always, Kate Klimo did a wonderful job in developing an exciting adventure for Jesse, Daisy, and Emmy. I was, however, a bit disappointed that she repeatedly had the characters tell Emmy that she was a big girl and should know better than to believe in Santa. My son, who loves these books, is only 8 and still a strong believer. Why shatter that innocence? Thankfully we used this book as a bedtime book instead of him reading it independently - as he normally does - so that I was able to skip over or change the words as we read.

My ten year old son loves this series. They just updated the AR website to include this newer book. He was so glad to not only be able to read it, but take a test and get the points at school for it. He really likes dragon books, so he really enjoyed this series a lot!!!

My five year old son loves the series (we read it to him). This installment doesn't really dispel the myth of Santa Claus as one reviewer complained - the antagonist poses as Santa but it doesn't spell out the notion that the "real" Santa didn't exist (fwiw).

My 8/9 year old kids love this series of books. Highly recommend to any parent considering. Mostly positive reinforcement message with only minor/very mild fantasy violence.

Another good story of Emerald and her dragon keepers but it is not good for littler ones who truely believe in Santa.

Alarmed at reading this as a bedtime story and seeing the get main characters Jesse & Daisy saying that there's no Santa or Tooth Fairy, I came to find some more descriptive reviews of this book. It gets worse from the two chapters we've read! This is NOT a sweet Christmasy tale for kids. They travel to the North Pole and do then meet "Santa & elves" -- who are dirty, greedy and enjoy eating endangered animals for dinner! Turns out Santa is really a bad guy in disguise. A major disappointment for the kids who have enjoyed reading this series. Poorly done, Kate Klimo, so I send a "bah, humbug" to you... you should be ashamed of putting yourself in the category of authors who try to destroy magic... stick to creating it!
