This book was a competent story, no more. I don't know about other 'romance' readers, but I hate novels which start out with the hero swiving his lewd mistress. Even worse, he goes on to complain he hasn't had a wench for a whole week, and says to the heroine on their wedding night,"If I had had known virgins were like this I would have had one long ago." Set in the year 1214 on English soil, near the border. Dominic Dragon of Pendragon was one of King John's most trusted knights. Even so, the Dragon Lord was surprised when the king gave him Ayrdale. King John had executed the Baron of Ayrdale for treason. Dominic was to immediately take up residence and marry either the widow or the daughter of the deceased Lord.

Lady Rose was all thorns on the outside! Trained as a warrior she guarded her mother, twin sister, and people until such time as her father returned. Instead of her father, the Dragon Lord arrived. Knowing the knight would want a meek wife and would chose her twin, Starla, to wed, Rose tricked him into believing the warrior sister was named Starla. Right after the wedding, Starla and their mother left for the convent. Newly married, Rose stayed home (now named Dragonwyck) to deal with Dominic.

Except when in bed, the two clashed! Things worsen when her uncle, Murdoc MacTavish, arrived with his men to claim the castle. Rose's marriage would not deter him. He and his step-son, Gunn, would do anything necessary to claim Dragonwyck as his own!

***** NO ONE WRITES LIKE CONNIE MASON! This one is non-stop adventure and lots of strife to keep you reading! It gets no better than this one, Readers! Highly recommended reading! *****

5.0 out of 5 stars Good medieval romance, November 9, 2001
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
King John orders his knight Dominic Dragon to wed either the widow of a treasonous but now dead baron or their daughter. Though he finds the Ayrdale estate quite enticing, Dominic prefers to remain single, but knows he has no options. However, Dominic is surprised to learn that twin daughters exist. One rips his skin for breathing while the other trembles in fear whenever he exhales. Dominic rejects the mother and the termagant as he figures the meek one would be more malleable and cause the least trouble.

However, Rose tricks Dominic into marrying her, the thorny twin because she would do anything for her sibling Starla, who prefers life in a nunnery. Besides wedding the wild one, Dominic has other troubles to contend with would destroy a lesser person with expectations of unreasonable levels of loyalty by King John and problems with his mistress and her uncle, but the worse problem for THE DRAGON LORD is he now loves his tricky spouse.

THE DRAGON LORD is an exciting yet humorous medieval romance. The story line is four points taut due to external machinations and six points amusement as Rose always seems to best Dominic who changes from frustration to winks at her actions. New York Times best-selling author Connie Mason shows why she is so highly regarded by fans and reviewers with this robust historical romance that freshens up the overused John scenario with the shrew taming the dragon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are we all reading the same book, February 11, 2006
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
If you want to already disagree because i gave this book a high rating go ahead and don't even bother reading the rest of the review, I often times wonder if everyone is reading the same book or books especially when everyone complains and say they are tired of reading the same formula and plot they always read about. 88% of these authors use the same formula and plot mostly in these historical romace novels/books such as (pirates, twin switch, captive brides and other plots and formula) while 90% of the heroes in a historical romance novel are always jerks that redeem themself. I always say it might be the same formula and plot and i never get tired of them because to me its how a author puts her twist on it that makes it a good novel which you do have some bad books, but until someone comes up with new formulas and plots i have no problem with the typical formulas and plots, most of the time I think some people try to downplay a book because everyone likes it but thats just my opinion..

I thought it was a good book, YES Dragon was a jerk in the beginning but i think he redeem himself to Rose throughout the rest of the book and thought he should have been more stern with Veronica, Rose she was a hellion and i mean it in a good way she has guts and that fire in her belly that keeps her going and great love scenes and chemistry between Rose and Dragon.. of course has everyone knows its the typical twin switch, I hate you but now I love you kind of book but I thought Connie Mason did a good job on this book, it wasn't a WOW kind of book for me but i thought it was still good enough to give 4 stars..

If you like Connie Mason you'll love this book and know what to expect from her writting style and for the first timers they always try to leave a bad review when reading a Connie Mason novel for the first time no matter how good it is try reading a second one to see how you feel about the author and her writing style and I'm sure you have a favourite author who has written a couple of bad books themself....

My opinion is so strong for this book because its like i always say a bad reivew can really downplay a good book and a good review can really up play a bad book, because of some of the bad reviews for this book I almost didn't read it but i'm glad i change my mind

This book was a competent story, no more. I don't know about other 'romance' readers, but I hate novels which start out with the hero swiving his lewd mistress. Even worse, he goes on to complain he hasn't had a wench for a whole week, and says to the heroine on their wedding night,"If I had had known virgins were like this I would have had one long ago." Talk about crass. He is like a barbarian. Rose is feisty and the only thing that redeems the book. Veronica the mistress is a pain, and Dominic too stupid in his dealings with her. But because he does not care about anyone'ss feelings but his own, he ignores the strife even though he wounds Rose badly in the process. The whole kidnap and rose trapped in her uncles castle was slapstick and silly. The endless background wittering about bad old King John and the Magna Carta was way too dull. When they couple finaly say they are in love with each other, well, most of us could not have cared less. Apart from some varied positions and word you would not use in front of your granny, this book was not in the least sexy. Where is the sensual detail, the smell, taste, feel of falling in love, not just putting up with each other because of proximity?

1.0 out of 5 stars A formula without excitement., August 3, 2002
By
Anna (Knoxville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
I did not like this book at all. It is a basic formula... landless knight marries wealthy heiress. Of course, relatively speaking, all romance novels are a formula to a degree. It is the twists on the plot that the author can offer and the creation of characters that are dear to the reader that makes the book different and one worth remembering.

I found that I did not care about either Rose or Dominic. They were entirely too one-dimensional. The story did not build suspense and as stated, it is merely a simple formula. There is the obligatory spurned lover who stirs up trouble and the villian from which the hero must save the heroine, but again, it simply did not hold my interest. On the plus side, Ms. Mason does a good job of creating passionate and sexy love scenes, but overall, this was not enough to hold my interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing, December 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
I was very disapointed with this book. Now, I am a big Connie Mason fan and I have read many of her books, but I found this book very unoriginal. It has the same tired plot used in many romance novels. It seemed like Mrs. Mason just took one of her previous novels, changed the characters and the plot a little, and then gave it a new title. I was so bored reading this book that I didn't even finish it. It might get better, I don't know, but if you are looking for an original plot don't get his book.

It is absolutely amazing how Mrs. Mason can come up with a book like this. I have read many of her books before but this one cuts the cake. The characters are excellent, love scenes spark like a match and the verbal battles just blows you away.
If you haven't picked up this book as yet, do it now because you will never read one like this. My favorite character in this is Rose because of the tongue lashes she gives to Dragon.
This is one of connie's best. READ IT!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Romance, April 10, 2007
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Connie Mason romance. I happened to enjoy it very much. I love the forced marriage-never met scenario. The switch was very enjoyable and the hero was smart enough to figure it quickly. The nasty uncle becoming acceptable in the end was too much for me, but I definately recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Medieval, July 20, 2005
This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
This story flew by so fast. A hot & steamy romance you can soak up like a sponge. It didn't overdo the twin thing - or the enemy thing - or even the annoying mistress who was mostly just mentioned in reference. Okay, it was a lot of the typical but extra enjoyable. If you like CM's smooth writing, this one's a must read.

3.0 out of 5 stars An average read., February 19, 2003

This review is from: The Dragon Lord (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read a couple of books by Connie Mason, and usually I like most of her books, especially the older ones. This book was not very interesting, some of the love scenes were pretty good, but her trademark sensuality seems to be missing from her books now a days. I did not find anything remarkable about the novel.....though I finished reading it pretty fast.
