This review is from: Dragon Magazine, Issue 53 (Paperback)
Dragon Magazine has been a great resource for those who play TSR's Dungeons & Dragons, and other games, since it premiered in 1976. Issue #53 came out in September 1981 (when AD&D was still in its 1st edition), and its theme seems to be the monk character class. Among the articles are:
He's got a lot to kick about!: which presents a new take on the monk (really it's a whole new class).
The Oracle: A new Non-Player Class diviner - interesting, but definitely for use only as an NPC.
Understanding Armory: an interesting article on heraldry.
The Bogatyrs of Kiev: a collection of NPCs drawn from the Byliny stories of Old Russia - Prince Vladimir I and his Druzhina, and their apponents.
The Garden of Nefaron: the crown jewel of this issue, a mini-module for 6 to 8 characters of 7th-10th level. Please note, though this module can be dropped into any campaign, psionics is an integral part of it.
Three new monsters: the Oculon, the Narra, and the Triffid. Did you ever read the book Day of the Triffids, or see the movie? If so, you will probably want these bad boys!
Overall, I found this to be a very good issue, but a mixed bag - I really liked the module, the Bogatyrs, and the Triffids. As for monks, well, they were never my scene. So, if you play 1st edition AD&D, then this is a very nice resource for you to get.
