Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Ursula K. Le Guin has called him "an important, innovative fantasist, worthy to rank with MacDonald, Edison, and Tolkien." This collection contains nearly 40 stories, many of them published under pseudonyms--the majority of which have never been reprinted--by one of the greatest fantasy writers of the century. Morris had three books published before his death in 1937. His sole collection of stories, The Secret Mountain & Other Tales, was published only in England. His final novel, The Chalchiuhite Dragon, was discovered and published only recently.

From Publishers Weekly

Though he wrote in obscurity, Morris (who died in 1937) was one of the formative influences on modern fantasy: in his novels, The Fates of the Princes of Dyfed (1914) and Book of Three Dragons (1930), he essentially invented the Celtic fantasy subgenre. This volume gathers all of Morris's shorter fiction, much of which was published pseudonymously in such out-of-the-way places as The Theosophical Path. Thus Anderson's collection offers students of fantasy a rare opportunity to rediscover one of the category's founding fathers. Unfortunately, the tales are unlikely to interest the majority of fantasy readers?Morris's prose is dense and antiquated, and his stories often slowed by repetitious description. Taken one or two at a time, the antique tone and languid pacing provide an intriguing change from today's action-packed fantasy, but together they grow rather tedious. Still, if only for the stories' historical and academic importance, this is an illuminating collection from an early master.

I'm very glad to have now belatedly acquainted myself with some of Kenneth Morris's fantasy fiction. The stories here are frequently based on traditional mythology and fairy tales, and Morris does quite well adapting them, reworking them, and retelling them in a suitably atmospheric manner. Fans of things like the Mabinogion will want to read these stories, as will those who like Lord Dunsany's work. It is also interesting to see how Morris, a Theosophist, expands upon and adapts Theosophy to his story-telling purposes, as well as uses the myths and stories as vehicles to teach Theosophical wisdom.

Doug Anderson knows what he's doing with obscure dead authors. This is fantastic stuff. Takes you back, back, back and away from these oh-so-Republican times. Thanks, Doug. T.M. Wright
