Book Description

November 1999
Joanne Bertin revisits the fabulous world she created in The Last Dragonlord, reuniting us with the Dragonlord Linden and his new-found love, Maurynna, in a tale of sweeping adventure and terrible consequences.

In the far-off land of Jehanglan, a dragon has been captured and put to horrible use -- its magic drained from it to hold a phoenix in stasis. But the phoenix needs to burn. When the dragon's cries of pain reach the ears of the Dragonlords Linden and Maurynna, they must travel deep into Jehanglan to free the dragon and the phoenix.

Amazon.com Review

Created by a misuse of magic in a shaman's war, were-dragons mediate between the five "truehuman" kingdoms and between truedragons and truehumans as well. In The Last Dragonlord, Bertin told of Linden Rathen, who spent 600 years without a "soultwin." (Each Dragonlord is made from two souls--one human, one dragon--so for each there is a match created from the "extra" halves.) He found his soultwin, Maurynna. In Dragon and Phoenix, the second book in the Dragonlords series, Maurynna's draconic half, Kyrissaean, won't speak to other Dragonlords or even another dragonsoul, and won't let her Change, which would give her the greater magics of the Dragonlords--healing fire and flying.

Linden and Maurynna are at Dragonskeep when Maurynna's great-uncle, the bard Otter, and her cousin Raven arrive with a man who claims he escaped from Jehanglan, a kingdom resembling Imperial China. There they have imprisoned a truedragon, using his magic to hold a phoenix captive. The phoenix provides magical power protecting Jehanglan and maintaining the Emperor's rule at the price of agony and madness for the dragon. The Dragonlords plan a daring rescue. The plan hinges on Maurynna, for her "hidden" dragon half will enable her to elude the priest-mages yet destroy the magical wards binding him.Bertin shifts between Maurynna's story and that of Shei-Luin, a barbarian concubine of the Phoenix Emperor who is scheming to gain power and protect her sons.

Bertin delivers a colorful setting, engaging characters, complex plotting, and an intriguing magical system. Fans of Anne McCaffrey's Pern stories and fantasies using Oriental elements like Barry Hughart's Master Li novels will find plenty here to enjoy. --Nona Vero

From Library Journal

In response to the cries of a true dragon held captive in the distant land of Jahanglan, a group of Dragonlords led by soultwins Linden Rathan and Mauryanna Kyrissaean set out on a journey of mercy and vengeance. Bertin's sequel to The Last Dragonlord explores the delicate relationships between the shapeshifting Dragonlords and the humans who love and fear them. The author's talent for depicting exotic cultures and complex interpersonal relationships provides a solid anchor for this rousing fantasy adventure. For most fantasy collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really liked it, and stayed up all night reading it., June 4, 2001
I'm not a teenager, in fact, I'm a grandmother, so saying that this book is too juvenile for anyone not a teen is a bit arrogant. I read many books, but for pure escapism, I really enjoy a good 'fantasy' novel! Some of those 'critically acclaimed' books for the 'discriminating reader' are just plain boring, although not all are.

Personally, I like reading about dragons. I think that Anne McCaffrey is my favorite author, but this give the same feelings: good vs bad, light vs darkness. The good guys win in the end by acting with honor. There should be more books like this that show our kids how to act with honor and respect to others.

I truly enjoyed this book, so much in fact, that I stayed up all night until 4 am reading, until I just could not stay awake anymore. I just didn't want to put the book down. I finished it the next morning, after a good nap!

This was absolutely great! I hope that there is a retro book, detailing Lindens past as well. Perhaps even one that details the shaman's war that created the DragonLords.

I started out with this second one in the series, and once it was finished, (I stayed up all night to read that one too!) I had to go find the 1st one to read. When are there going to be more? I can hardly wait.

Keep up the good work, Joanne Bertin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun book!, January 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragon and Phoenix (Hardcover)
Other reviews go into the plot, so I won't. Many 2nd novels in a trilogy are dull, hard to get through, and unappealing. Not so this one. Ms. Bertin adds interesting cultures, characters, and climates to what was already rich in The Last Dragonlord. Bad guys are bad but still have good characteristics; good guys still have flaws. She makes people and animals real. Now I have new favorite characters and I can't wait for Bard's Oath!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Novel and a Breathtaking Sequel!, June 2, 2000
This review is from: Dragon and Phoenix (Hardcover)
Joanne Bertin wrote "The Last Dragonlord," which is my favorite book, I literally could not put it down! I was beyond belief happy to find out she was writing a sequel. "Dragon and Phoenix" is the best sequel novel I have ever read, it maintained the characters you loved from the first novel and made them even more intriging and captivating to read about. The descripitions of the characters and places are some of the best I've read. The plot was completely unexpected and other-worldly great. Joanne Bertin has a mystifing talent that I do not believe she has fully tapped into yet... but hopefully she has may more novels to surprise and captivate us with. Joanne Bertin is one of the best writers out there and is quickly becoming my favortie author.
