Book Description

June 1993
Science fiction novel, set in the author's Star Rigger universe.

Synopsis: starfaring SF with mythic dimension.

In a realm hidden in the interstellar Flux, dragons fight a desperate war against a creature of terrible power, who seeks to shape all of space and time into a web of power and death.

The Dream Mountain, source of knowledge and life to dragons, has been captured by the enemy; and yet, a single hope remains. Ancient prophecy spoke of One who would come from outside the realm, One who would challenge the darkness. The "One" of the prophecy is Jael LeBrae, human star rigger. Once before (DRAGONS IN THE STARS), Jael aided the dragons in their struggle. Now she must return to face the final peril.

And according to prophecy, the cost is her own life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This intricate but bloated sequel to Dragons in the Stars blends two highly original universes, one SF, one fantasy. The Flux is the mutable hyperspace used by "riggers"--space-pilots--to cover interstellar distances. Somewhere in the Flux is a magical realm inhabited by talking dragons and other fantastic creatures who are locked in a cataclysmic war with a force known as the Nail of Strength. Although struck a heavy blow in the last book, this entity has more than recovered and now threatens even the universe beyond the Flux. The dragons' only hope is the female rigger Jael, who has fought beside them in the past and was prophesied to return as their savior. Jael is an appealing heroine, but, given her centrality, she appears in too few scenes. Despite a refreshingly unique setting and excellently realized characters, Carver's fantasy plot is standard and predictable, dragging on with little action and an excess of agonized internal monologues. Though it has some emotionally powerful moments, this work is weaker than its predecessor.

From Library Journal

Star-rigger Jael LeBrae is drawn once more through hyperspace to the realm of dragons to lend her assistance in a war between dragons of light and darkness as the prophesied savior "from beyond." Carver collapses the boundaries between genres as he skillfully blends fire-breathing dragons with spacefaring humans in his latest epic saga set in his Star Rigger universe. Fans of dragon-based fiction will enjoy this fresh look at their favorite creatures. For most sf or fantasy collections.

More About the Author

Kindle readers: Would you like a glimpse behind the scenes of my writing of The Chaos Chronicles? The ebook versions of Neptune Crossing, Strange Attractors, and The Infinite Sea now include all-new Afterwords--my reflections on the evolution of the series and my experience in writing each book. I've kept the prices low on these editions to encourage you to give them a try if you're new to my work. I hope you enjoy them!

Here's a little about me:

A Midwesterner by birth and upbringing (I grew up in Huron, Ohio), I've lived in New England ever since attending college at Brown University, in Rhode Island. Now I live outside Boston with my wife and daughters, and also with a boxer named Hermione and a cat named Moonlight.

I've loved science fiction since I first began to read, and from the time I began writing, I always knew my first love was going to be SF. I'm not sure where you'd place me as a writer: I love astronomy and cosmology and hard SF concepts, and yet the characters are the most important thing to me in any story, whether it's a story I'm reading or a story I'm writing. It's the people, and the sense of wonder, that have always made science fiction--and science!--so awe-inspiring to me. Basically, I have always tried to write stories that I would want to read myself.

Some years ago, I developed and hosted on the air an educational TV series fo r middle-school classrooms, called Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy--teaching kids the basics of how to turn ideas into stories. That later turned into a computer-based course called, oddly enough, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing. In 2005, I decided it was about time to put the information online as a public service, available for free to any aspiring writer. It's online now, and you can use it anytime you like, just by going to http://www.writesf.com.

I also invite you to stop by and read my regular blog, at http://starrigger.blogspot.com, or my web site at http://www.starrigger.net.

Thanks for visiting! And please take a look at the video trailer for my novel Sunborn. If you'd like to view it in full-screen for full effect, you can do that at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K03RMcSeiY4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy/SF at it's best, August 7, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragon Rigger (Paperback)
This is one of the best Fantasy/SF stories up to date. It offers a surely intriguing setup of characters and storylines from the very beginning and keeps up a good pace from start to finish. The leading characters are brilliantly realized and the plot offers a good amount of 'high energy scenes'. Once you're into the story it is UN-putdownable and you'll literally devour the pages. Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read!, April 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragon Rigger (Hardcover)
It's the best book! (Though I did read it before I had found a copy of the first book, Dragons in the Stars, and still, this one has more action, so I liked it more). Any dragon fan needs to read this, because this is so much better than normal fantasy; it's sci-fi! Still my favorite book, and I've had it for a couple of years now. It's awesome, and it's so descriptive that you can feel yourself watching the whole thing as though you're really there! It even made me cry (okay, so I had a thing for FullSky...)

This review is from: Dragon Rigger (Hardcover)
A masterfully written book. I've read it so many times it is falling apart. The storyline is fantastic and the characters colorful. i believe this book is a must read for all dragon and sci-fi readers alike. My only regret is that Carver has only written two books thet deal with the mountain realm.
