Grade 4-6–This sequel to
The Un-Magician (S & S, 2004) continues the adventures of Timothy Cade, the only person in Arcanum who does not possess magical capabilities. Not only is Timothy considered a freak, but he is also a threat to the mages because he can actually negate magic. After Verlis, a dragonlike creature of the Wurm clan from another dimension, is imprisoned by Constable Grimshaw because the mages believe the Wurm is a threat to the safety of their city, Timothy vows to rescue his friend. Dungeons and Dragons fans are the most likely audiences for this ornate, suspense-filled installment in the series. Reluctant readers will probably stumble over the copious adjectives, and the themes of xenophobia and "preventive war" are unmistakable and ever present. Purchase if the first book is in high demand.
