Book Description

10 and up5 and upOutcast
After learning how his powerlessness can be used as a weapon in the world of magic and defeating Nicodemus's plan to overthrow the government, Timothy travels to a war-torn dimension to help the Wurm: fierce magicians and warriors descended from an ancient dragon race. But while covertly gathering information on the age-old feud between the bloodthirsty Wurm and the Parliament of Mages, Timothy unearths a conspiracy - and a very different story about those he's investigating...But that's not his only problem: despite Nicodemus's death, mages are still disappearing ...and this time someone is painting Timothy as the villain.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6–This sequel to The Un-Magician (S & S, 2004) continues the adventures of Timothy Cade, the only person in Arcanum who does not possess magical capabilities. Not only is Timothy considered a freak, but he is also a threat to the mages because he can actually negate magic. After Verlis, a dragonlike creature of the Wurm clan from another dimension, is imprisoned by Constable Grimshaw because the mages believe the Wurm is a threat to the safety of their city, Timothy vows to rescue his friend. Dungeons and Dragons fans are the most likely audiences for this ornate, suspense-filled installment in the series. Reluctant readers will probably stumble over the copious adjectives, and the themes of xenophobia and "preventive war" are unmistakable and ever present. Purchase if the first book is in high demand.–Farida S. Dowler, Mercer Island Library, WA

I didn't have anything to read so I started reading my son's books. Many I just couldn't make myself read. But this series is interesting, well written, and very imaginative. My 12-year old son and I have read the first 3 and are anxiously awaiting the next.

A Kid's Review
I loved this book as much as I loved the first book. The way it ended makes me want to read Ghostfire the next book in the Outcast series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Brawl, April 4, 2006
Timothy thought that being the only person in his world without any magical abilities was a curse. But what if it is a blessing in disguise? On one hand, he cannot wield magic; on the other, perhaps he cannot be harmed by spells cast by others.

As he discovers more about his own skills, he also uncovers another dimension. There, he encounters warrior dragons have a war-torn past which is tangled up in that of Arcanum - Timothy's own dimension.

Dragon Secrets, the second in the OutCast quartet, is imaginative and interesting. It picks up where the first book, The Un-Magician, left off. The action in the Wurm world moves the series right along, and the introduction of new characters is smooth, never overshadowing those we met earlier.

I am a bookseller who has seen my fair share of reluctant readers, especially young boys - and I have had a great deal of success with this series, seeing those kids come back into the store, asking me for the next book! OutCast is an inventive series that something that can be enjoyed by all ages, so don't miss out.
